Project: Kids Learn About Saving Money & Energy {Home or School Science Project} #GELighting

(As part of my partnership with GE, I received coupons for my GE light bulbs. All opinions posted about my GE Lighting experience are my own.?I am a member of the Collective Bias? ?Social Fabric? Community. ?This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper insights study for Collective Bias? and GE Lighting #CBias #SocialFabric Please see my Disclosure Policy.)
This is the start of our at home project for the next couple months. We are replacing light bulbs in our house with GE Energy Efficient and GE Energy Smart bulbs and my kids are going to track both types of savings.

We started by shopping for bulbs and supplies and checking out some project ideas from GE. We are doing this project to demonstrate the energy savings that can be seen as national legislation requires the phase out of traditional incandescent bulbs over the next couple years.

We decided to have the kids specifically look at their own energy usage as part of the overall home audit. They will both have a sheet at their switch and a pen or pencil handy to note when they are turning their lights on and off. By doing this, we will see how long the lights are on (I can't wait to show them how many times they leave them on when they have left the room!!!) and be able to calculate the savings from the switching of the bulbs.

With the upgrades in the CFL technology that provide instant on lighting, we lean towards using them more. But, it was nice to see that there are GE Energy Efficient bulbs available that look like a traditional incandescent, but use less energy. In order to get the biggest energy and money savings, most of our switching will be to the CFL's.

When it comes down to how our house looks in the different types of light, we do prefer the soft white bulbs in areas where we spend the most time.

This will be a great project over the next couple months and hopefully something we can build on for a future school project. If you homeschool, this would be a great science project that will teach the kids about saving money and energy!

Our project will be built on graphs and a display board.
