Supersymmetry Fails Test, Forcing Physics to Seek New Ideas

With the Large Hadron Collider unable to find the particles that the theory says must exist, the field of particle physics is back to the "nightmare scenario" -- holes that riddled their picture of the universe three decades ago

particle physics, Large Hadron Collider, LHC, supersymmetry, standard modelLHC TUNNEL: No hints of ?new physics? beyond the predictions of the Standard Model have turned up in experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, a 17-mile circular tunnel at CERN Laboratory in Switzerland that slams protons together at high energies. Image: CERN

From Simons Science News

As a young theorist in Moscow in 1982, Mikhail Shifman became enthralled with an elegant new theory called supersymmetry that attempted to incorporate the known elementary particles into a more complete inventory of the universe.

?My papers from that time really radiate enthusiasm,? said Shifman, now a 63-year-old professor at the University of Minnesota. Over the decades, he and thousands of other physicists developed the supersymmetry hypothesis, confident that experiments would confirm it. ?But nature apparently doesn?t want it,? he said. ?At least not in its original simple form.?

With the world?s largest supercollider unable to find any of the particles the theory says must exist, Shifman is joining a growing chorus of researchers urging their peers to change course.

In an essay posted last month on the physics website arXiv.org, Shifman called on his colleagues to abandon the path of ?developing contrived baroque-like aesthetically unappealing modifications? of supersymmetry to get around the fact that more straightforward versions of the theory have failed experimental tests. The time has come, he wrote, to ?start thinking and developing new ideas.?

But there is little to build on. So far, no hints of ?new physics? beyond the Standard Model ? the accepted set of equations describing the known elementary particles ? have shown up in experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, operated by the European research laboratory CERN outside Geneva, or anywhere else. (The recently discovered Higgs boson was predicted by the Standard Model.) The latest round of proton-smashing experiments, presented last week at the Hadron Collider Physics conference in Kyoto, Japan, ruled out another broad class of supersymmetry models, as well as other theories of ?new physics,? by finding nothing unexpected in the rates of several particle decays.

?Of course, it is disappointing,? Shifman said. ?We?re not gods. We?re not prophets. In the absence of some guidance from experimental data, how do you guess something about nature??

Younger particle physicists now face a tough choice: follow the decades-long trail their mentors blazed, adopting evermore contrived versions of supersymmetry, or strike out on their own, without guidance from any intriguing new data.

?It?s a difficult question that most of us are trying not to answer yet,? said Adam Falkowski, a theoretical particle physicist from the University of Paris-South in Orsay, France, who is currently working at CERN. In a blog post about last week?s results, Falkowski joked that it was time to start applying for jobs in neuroscience.

?There?s no way you can really call it encouraging,? said Stephen Martin, a high-energy particle physicist at Northern Illinois University who works on supersymmetry, or SUSY for short. ?I?m certainly not someone who believes SUSY has to be right; I just can?t think of anything better.?

Supersymmetry has dominated the particle physics landscape for decades, to the exclusion of all but a few alternative theories of physics beyond the Standard Model.

?It?s hard to overstate just how much particle physicists of the past 20 to 30 years have invested in SUSY as a hypothesis, so the failure of the idea is going to have major implications for the field,? said Peter Woit, a particle theorist and mathematician at Columbia University.

The theory is alluring for three primary reasons: It predicts the existence of particles that could constitute ?dark matter,? an invisible substance that permeates the outskirts of galaxies. It unifies three of the fundamental forces at high energies. And ? by far the biggest motivation for studying supersymmetry ? it solves a conundrum in physics known as the hierarchy problem.

Humble Bundle teams with THQ for Darksiders, Metro 2033, Saints Row The Third on the cheap

THQ may not be an "indie" or tied to Android, but the ailing game publisher is teaming with the much beloved Humble Bundle folks to offer a flexibly priced batch of great THQ games. Zelda-alike Darksiders, spooky shooter Metro 2033, destruction sandbox Red Faction: Armageddon, and the entire Company of Heroes pack highlight the bundle's standards, while 2011's greatest Kanye simulator, Saints Row: The Third, comes with the rest should you choose to spend over the average payment price (currently around $5). You'll have to drop at least $1 for Steam keys to the main titles, but that'll also net you soundtracks to those main titles as well -- sadly, the offer is only available on PC. You've got two weeks to make your decision, though we'd call this a no brainer.

Verizon best, AT&T worst in Consumer Reports carrier survey

9 hrs.

Consumer Reports' annual ratings of wireless providers, released Thursday, shows that the major cellphone companies still have a lot of work to do to boost customer satisfaction.

In fact, none of the big four national carriers had an overall satisfaction score above 72 percent, across the board lower than their overall scores from just two years ago. Consumer Reports says cellphone companies remain among the lowest-rated service providers it evaluates.

We pay a lot for our cellphones and wireless services and we expect a lot in return: rock-solid voice connections, seamless data downloads and world-class customer service. But apparently we don?t always feel that we?get it.

Verizon topped the list of major carriers in this year?s subscriber survey, followed by Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T. The rankings are based on responses from 63,000 readers.

?Verizon stands out from the pack if you are a heavy-duty data user,? said Mike Gikas, senior electronics editor at Consumer Reports. ?They?re the Cadillac network. They?re pricey in some respects, but in terms of overall quality of service and availability of service, they are the overall leader.?

This confirms what J.D. Power and Associates found in its 2012 Wireless Network Quality Performance Study released in August: Verizon is consistently better than the average wireless carrier and much better than most of its competitors.

But your satisfaction can depend on where you live. The Consumer Reports survey looked at 23 metropolitan areas. It found the quality of cell service can vary from place to place. For example, Sprint is virtually tied with Verizon in St. Louis, but in last place (significantly below AT&T) in Chicago.

It?s interesting to note that three smaller companies had the highest marks for customer satisfaction in the Consumer Reports survey: Consumer Cellular, U.S. Cellular and Credo Mobile. U.S. Cellular, the biggest of this group (with service in 24 mostly Midwestern states), earned a reader score of 88 percent.

?They also offer an excellent experience for consumers and an affordable one, especially if you?re looking for a family plan,? Gikas said.

One group that was happier than most: AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile subscribers who have smartphones that connect to 4G networks. They were consistently more satisfied than customers with 3G service. In fact, when it comes to 4G service, AT&T had the fewest problems of any carrier.

?AT&T has been a basement dweller for several years now. A lot of people are unhappy with the service, except 4G customers. They seem to like the service from AT&T,? Gikas told me.

A tough bunch to please
People?s expectation of good service is much higher than it was just a few years ago.

??They expect their smartphone to do whatever it?s supposed to do every time,? said Kirk Parsons, senior director of wireless services at J.D. Power and Associates.

Smartphone users practically live with the device in their hands. They notice the difference between a connection that takes a second and a fraction of a second. And when something goes wrong, they?re likely to hold a grudge against the company.

The ads promise more and we assume our cellphone company to deliver. For example, subscribers with 4G phones expect those high-speed connections everywhere they go. But 4G service isn?t available everywhere.?

?If you travel, there are still a lot of open patches where 4G is not available,? Parsons noted. ?That frustrates people who want the service wherever they go.?

The potential downside of higher speeds
Consumer Reports cautions that faster phones can result in higher bills. It?s fun to use your phone to play online games and watch streaming video, but if you?re not careful you can really burn through the megabytes.

?Your monthly bill will double with a smartphone,? Gikas said.

And just as more people are upgrading to smartphones, Verizon and AT&T, the country?s two biggest wireless companies, no longer offer unlimited data plans to new customers.

As these ?all-you-can-eat? data plans disappear, some heavy users may find that they go through their monthly allowance a lot sooner than expected.

A cheaper way to go
If you?re looking to spend less on cellphone service, consider a prepaid plan with no monthly service contract. The rates are lower, the phones have gotten better ? you now have a greater choice of smartphones ? and Consumer Reports survey shows that customer satisfaction is relatively high.?

You will pay more for the phone because there is no subsidy from the carrier. With the typical 2-year contract, the cost of that phone is rolled into your monthly rate. With prepaid service, you buy the phone upfront, so your monthly rate is lower.

?Over the course of about two years, you?ll end up paying less,? Gikas noted.

Consumer Reports? top-rated prepaid carrier is TracFone. It offers inexpensive plans for people who don?t use their cell phone very often.

The editors say Straight Talk and Virgin Mobile are standouts for budget smartphones. They offer low-cost, unlimited plans for voice, text and data.

Affiliate Marketing Will Make A Difference With These Tips

TIP! Consider creating a web page for comments and customer reviews of your products and services. This kind of feedback from users is an effective way to show visitors the benefits and uses for your product.

It can be hard to do internet promotion if you?re just beginning, especially when there is so much competition in your field. To make Internet marketing work for your site, look at multiple marketing options, then get the right ones for your business set up properly. This article will help you get started!

Press Releases

TIP! Here is a tip for internet marketing! Reassure your visitors that they can have confidence when they come to your site. You should let your customers know you protect and respect their privacy by publishing a privacy policy.

Sending a press release out is an excellent way to generate traffic when marketing your site. If you can easily write a clear and useful press releases, you can find several online sources that will publish them to specific niche markets. Doing these small press releases and blurbs can greatly boost you website traffic and sales.

TIP! Looking for a way to market online? Give your visitors a good reason to provide you with their email addresses so that you can grow your opt-in list. Offer freebies or contests, and they will be much more likely to provide you with their contact information.

No matter what is in your ads, back it up with evidence. A lot of people will not believe what you say about your products or services until you provide more details. Including research study results, testimonials, references or guarantees can enhance your credibility and increase the likelihood that you make a sale. Just making statements without supplying proof to back them up will cause many people to ignore your business and product.

TIP! Your website?s tag is the primary indicator for how people see your site, so make sure it accurately defines your purpose. The title tag shows at the top left corner of the browser window.

Before you set out to get your website ranked, you should concentrate on building a quality site. This needs to be the first thing anyone does in online business. The better your website looks and functions, the less effort it takes to maintain.

TIP! Finding information on effective marketing strategies does not have to cost a fortune. Many free resources are readily available.

Mobile marketing should also be considered. Try sending text messages to the visitors of your site to inform them of special deals. This is a new method of advertising that also will boost your advertising campaigns in Internet marketing.

TIP! A great way to market via the Internet is to write about your business. If you have any writing talent whatsoever, you could definitely submit various press releases and articles to different sites and magazines.

Create sites on Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace to target a niche market. Make sure, however, that you do not send information to people who didn?t request it; this can quickly turn off potential customers.

TIP! Try using the word ?guarantee? in an advertisement when deploying an internet marketing campaign. Your customers want to be assured that they will not lose any money by purchasing from you.

There is an art to Web marketing. Always look at both sides when you are looking to embark into the world Internet promotion and consider all aspects of it. This can sometimes be challenging.

TIP! Don?t forget the little details on your web pages. The site?s title should be placed in the right hand corner up top on each page with a slight blurb about what the site is about.

You cannot use a copy of another website and expect to be successful with it. It is easy to discover duplicate content, so save yourself trouble by creating your own work. Focus on being original.

TIP! In order to build the emotional attachment with your customer and your service or product, marketing materials online can be used. Convince the reader that their life would be better if they buy your product.

Do not abandon projects that did not work. It may work better now than it did the first time. The Internet is always changing and people are always find new uses. While you shouldn?t invest in failed ideas, hang on to them for the future.

TIP! Keeping your website simple and easy to navigate is an invaluable internet marketing tip. The seductive power of multimedia tools like Adobe Flash or Microsoft Silverlight will tempt website owners, and are often offered up by professional website designers.

Use popular websites to advertise your company online. By investing the time to advertise on reputable websites, you give yourself a lot of great exposure. Make certain to chose the site your ad will be seen on wisely; it should be very popular and a great place to showcase your business.

TIP! Customers will be much more interested in clicking on your banner if you create something enticing that doesn?t look exactly like the other boring banners out there. Make sure the banner links directly to your product or service page correctly.

Successful Internet marketers show enthusiasm for their products and are positive about their business. Show your prospects how much you enjoy your product and how much you love your business. That emotion will be contagious and you will convince those who visit your site to love the product too. Enthusiastic customers are likely to be paying customers.

TIP! Limited time incentives help to spark interest in your site. You may offer free shipping to a limited number of shoppers, for instance, or you may give away gift-wrapping to those who make orders prior to a given date.

Putting a blog on your website is a great idea if your business is finding it hard to add new content regularly. New content gets the attention of the search engines which will increase your ranking in their listings and lead to more traffic for your site. A blog can help you to add new content as often as you need to.

Free Shipping

TIP! You should complete a glossary full of various terms if you strive to be looked at as an authority figure in your particular field. A glossary is beneficial to both potential and current customers and could help to direct new traffic toward your site.

You may want to offer incentives to your customers, to encourage them to order products faster. Some popular incentives that other marketers offer include free shipping and free wrapping services. You could also offer free shipping to your first 100 customers. This is just one of the many great ways you can find to entice visitors into becoming customers.

TIP! Consider a unique approach to creating logos and banners rather than the simple rectangles that some companies use. Design them as click-able links, so they blend in with your page.

Being active in popular social media is an Affiliate marketing must these days. Creating a Facebook page allows your customers to provide you with feedback that you can use and that other customers can see. Twitter allows you to engage on an informal basis with your customers.

TIP! Give people a way to tell you why they didn?t make a purchase with you. If you allow them to tell you what the issue was, you can focus your efforts more effectively.

A 500 error page that is kind to your users is an effective tool. This will happen when some database code you wrote decides to just stop working. The generic 500 page doesn?t tell visitors anything except that they can?t reach the page they wanted. A page like this simply lets the visitor know that you?re taking everything seriously. Even when your page doesn?t load, you?ve still taken the time to add some custom touches to it.

TIP! Money is required to buy a quality domain. It?s probably going to be difficult to get the domain name that matches your company name.

More people will choose to visit your website if you can provide them with something they cannot get anywhere else. You could draw industry related cartoons about your product or industry, or offer them an e-book that will give them tools to be successful. Providing a unique offer will get people excited about your site.

TIP! Utilize email as a way to keep your customers interested in what you have to offer. Grab your customers? interest by creating newsletters that inform and intrigue them.

Send related items and catalogs to your customers. They are more likely to make purchases from you if a previous order went well. If your site sells movies and a customer buys something from a particular genre, consider sending them links to other movies you have to offer in that same genre. The more you customize the buying experience for a customer, and the more you base your offerings on what they have already purchased from you, the more impressive your sales are going to be.

TIP! Try offering free stuff on your site! A download of information relevant to your niche can be very effective. For instance, if you are in the construction industry, you could offer an article or book on the changing code regulations in your area.

It?s imperative that Web marketing is handled in an organized fashion. As you have already learned, investing the time in making sure that you have set up and running properly will make all the difference when it comes to success. By following the tips mentioned here, you will begin seeing an increase of the traffic to your website and emerging sales.

Sexual Politics of Hip Hop Reexamined as Lessons in Sexual Selection

I received the great honor of being invited to speak at the Dr. Laura C. Harris Symposium at Denison University. It?s a small (compared to OK State) Liberal Arts College in Granville, Ohio ? outside of Columbus. The Symposium is sponsored by the Women?s Studies Department, and has been inviting interesting speakers across the academic disciplines to talk or perform or present creative ideas about women and girls and society.? (My head is still spinning from the invite and curious about how I got on their radar.)

This 2012-2013 theme is ?Sex, Science and Society?

The series will examine the role of women and of gender in science.?? Over the course of the year, we will look at how women are represented in science and at how gendered assumptions affect scientific discourse, practice, and theorizing.?What are the challenges faced by women as practitioners of science??To what extent is underrepresentation still an issue??How do the criteria and conditions of success for women in the sciences compare to those in other academic disciplines??How does science study and represent women??How do what scientists tell us about women?s bodies and about sex and gender difference affect our lives??How is scientific practice and knowledge structured through intersections of gender, race and sexuality??Finally, in what ways is such research often shaped by masculinist biases in both theory and methodology??Does research from feminist perspectives differ, and if so, how?

I was tempted to address all of these questions, but realized I couldn?t do.? I decided to play on my strengths and passions: Feminist Activism, Science Outreach, Teaching, and Hip Hop. The talk I am giving is titled:

?The Birds, the Bees and the Beats: Sexual Politics of Hip Hop Reexamined as Lessons in Sexual Selection?

Once considered an ephemeral music genre for urban audiences only, hip hop has defied all early expectations. Now mainstream, hip hop provides a social and cultural frame for examining human behavior. In both music videos and song lyrics, many hip hop songs paint vivid images of women in sexual contexts. Using these songs and videos as cultural references, I present lessons in sexual selection, introducing key concepts such as mate choice, sexual conflict, and mating strategies. Specifically, I deconstruct four main feminine archetypes in hip hop: Main chicks, Side Chicks, Bad Bitches (Dimes), and Ugly Hoes (Girls) and challenge young people to become more cognizant of the ever-pervasive narrative of women as sexual objects.

True to my Hip Hop Education Pedagogy interests, I will be remixing Malte Andersson and Bobbi Low?s traditional lessons in Sexual Selection, then adding some feminist commentary about the hypersexualization of women in popular hip hop. In fact, here is my playlist for my talk:

?Whatever You Like? by? T.I.

?Gold Digger? by Kanye West with Jamie Foxx

?Chickenhead? by Project Pat with La? Chat, DJ Paul & Juicy J

?I Got That Fire? by Juvenile? with Mannie Fresh

?Chop My Money? by P-Square with Akon, May D

I suppose the talk is public. I?m not exactly sure, but here is the announcement on the University?s Media Relations page. To answer a question many asked: No, the talk will not be streamed. The University is recording it and keeping a copy of the video in their Library Archives. In the meantime, you can follow me on Twitter, I?ll be posting updates during my campus visit. @DNLee5

Green Energy Stimulus Bankruptcies Come in All Sizes

Printer-friendlyPrinter-friendlyEmail to friendEmail to friend

ReVolt logoThe little-reported bankruptcy of a relatively small electric vehicle battery manufacturer last month illustrates the many problems with President Obama?s green energy stimulus program, and why the more appropriate location for the ramblin?, gamblin? White House might be Las Vegas.

This smaller (compared to other Recovery Act beneficiaries) example is ReVolt Technology, which relocated from Switzerland to Oregon to take advantage of a $5 million Recovery Act grant from the Department of Energy in order to develop and mass-produce a ?zinc-air? vehicle battery. Its technology was developed in Norway where the company was backed since 2004 by Viking Venture Management. According to the Portland Business Journal, ReVolt believed it could ?deliver twice the energy of conventional rechargeable battery technologies, such as lithium-ion.?

Federal money wasn?t the only attraction. The company also received $5 million in city and state loans, as well as business energy tax credits. Thus we have another alternative energy failure ? much like the many wind, solar and electric vehicle busts that have been archived by Obama administration watchdogs ? that went belly-up once the government money ran out.

Of course, none of these companies can be honest about the fact that they are just rent-seeking. So to justify it, in the case of the green energy flim-flam, they cloak it in the mysterious and undefined parameters of ?research investment.?

Hence we have thousands of government-funded companies like ReVolt, whose super-secret technology ? just by virtue of its existence ? justified the aforementioned millions of dollars from taxpayers. If you can make bureaucrats (or their contracted law firms) believe a zinc-air battery (or for that matter, any made-up technology that sounds good) holds promise as the ?next big thing? in energy research breakthroughs, then the money?s in the bag.

The proof that government loan/grant analysts don?t know what they?re doing is obvious. Stimulus money went out the door to unproven start-ups, many whose leaders and investors were adept at playing the government cronyism game and/or making a case for their ?alternative? technologies, such as Fisker Automotive, A123 Systems, Abound Solar and Solyndra. The determination that any of these companies deserved financial support looked more like the result of a crapshoot rather than a thorough and proper evaluation.

In the case of ReVolt, despite its obvious shortcomings, the Portland Business Journal still attempted to determine whether government authorities properly vetted the company ? especially the state of Oregon. The publication, via public records requests, sought all loan application materials submitted to the state of Oregon, Oregon Department of Energy and Portland Development Commission.

What it received were documents that were heavily redacted, thanks to exemptions in the public information law (which is the case in most states when it comes to corporate welfare) that allow private companies to protect ?trade secrets? and other confidential information. The Business Journal also reported that ReVolt asked officials to sign an agreement to further prevent the release of certain company information. Failed technology and bankrupt businesses are entitled to their privacy, you see, even when taxpayers are forced to pay for it.?

?Since detailed descriptions of the company?s technology and most of its financial information ? including its balance sheet ? are redacted, it?s difficult to determine whether the company presented a good case for more than $5 million in taxpayer subsidies,? the Business Journal reported.

What the publication did discover was a sales forecast memo signed by CEO James McDougall that projected ReVolt would sell 5,000 of its batteries by 2013 at $5,000 each, with a false prophecy of $25 million in 2013 revenue.

As for the promise of ReVolt?s technology, a loan review panel for the Portland Development Commission characterized the company?s application as ?high risk.? The Business Journal quoted an analyst for Pike Research, who said the zinc-oxide battery developed by ReVolt wouldn?t be viable ?in the first part of this decade.?

Despite that expert assessment, the feds and Oregonians were apparently more impressed with ReVolt?s techno-dazzle. According to the Recovery.gov Web site, the company promised to design a battery based upon ?cycle life, round trip efficiency and power.? The unit?s zinc ?is transported through reaction tubes (the cathode) to facilitate the discharge and recharge of the battery.? The remarkable-sounding ?Zinc Flow Air Battery? was to be ?a new class of rechargeable battery system that combines key innovations from the fields of fuel cells and metal-air batteries to enable a number of disruptive inventions aimed at solving previous system limitations.?

Compared to those striking credentials ? whether they?re legitimate or not ? ?high risk? and ?not viable? get lost in the fireworks. At least that?s the case for government know-nothings; for the private investment world, they tend to examine reality more, and if they don?t then they lose their own shirts? and not taxpayers.? As top investor Viking Venture announced in mid-October when ReVolt revealed it would go bankrupt, the non-government capital dried up.

?The potential of the technology has been considered huge and the company has attracted considerable capital from international investors as well as public grants,? said Viking?s Managing Partner Erik Hagen. ?However, it is time to acknowledge that the company could not attract new capital in order to continue the development.?

ReVolt is much like other green stimulus recipients that NLPC has covered, which illustrates the depths of indifference and/or incompetence that existed among those who reviewed loan and grant applications, both at the federal and state levels. Much of the attention has been directed at the big beneficiaries like Solyndra and A123 Systems, which were granted hundreds of millions of dollars, but there are many times more undeserving companies ? like ReVolt ? that also received funds. For example:

?????? ReVolt was similar to bankrupt battery makers A123 and Ener1, both of which had no serious track record of success, no established mass-market technology, and not enough customers to justify huge investment. How many other little businesses with minimal credentials like ReVolt were shoveled money?

?????? ReVolt was similar to Kansas City-based Smith Electric Vehicles, which left Great Britain ? where it was failing ? to seek fame and stimulus fortune in the U.S. How many other companies left their homelands because President Obama threw open the green energy vault to nearly all comers?

?????? ReVolt was similar to Abound Solar, which was described as ?lagging in technology relative to its competitors? by Fitch Ratings, who also said there was only a 45-percent likelihood Abound would repay its loan to taxpayers. Like ?high risk? ReVolt, Abound was granted the taxpayer-backed loans anyway. How many other companies, large and small, were identified by industry experts as poor bets yet were given public money?

Bankruptcies and discredit have not diminished the Obama administration?s passion to give away other peoples? money to their cronies and other alt-energy operatives. So despite no more automotive ReVolt, and no voter revolt, we are likely to see no change.

Illuminating the no-man's land of waters' surface: Strong electric charge observed at the interface between oil and water is not due to impurities

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Water repelling molecules are said to be hydrophobic. The hydration -- or formation of water interfaces around hydrophobic molecules -- is important for many biological processes: protein folding, membrane formation, transport of proteins across an interface, the transmission of action potentials across membranes. It is involved as well in the process of creating mayonnaise, or in the fact that you can get rid of fat with soap. Hydrophobic interfaces although long studied, are poorly understood.

Here's an amusing kitchen-table experiment to illustrate waters unusual properties: put a drop of pure insulating oil in a glass of pure, non-conducting water, and create an electric field using two wires hooked up to a battery. You'll see the oil move from the negative to the positive pole of the little circuit you've created. You have created charge in a mixture that was neutral, and a huge amount of it too, judging from the speed at which the droplets move. The same thing happens for gas bubbles in water; the phenomenon of charging applies to all hydrophobic/water interfaces.

A century of debates

It's not a new discovery; scientists have observed the phenomenon in the middle of the 19th century. But despite more than a century of research, the reason why such a huge electric charge exists is still the subject of heated debate.

In an article published this week in Angewandte Chemie -- a journal of reference in the field -- EPFL scientist Sylvie Roke challenges a hypothesis put forward last spring in the same journal. With experimental proof to back her up, the holder of the Julia Jacobi chair in photomedicine makes her case: the phenomenon is not caused by the inevitable "impurities" present in oils, as her colleagues claim, but rather by certain intrinsic properties of the water molecules involved.

Show the unseeable

For proof, Roke turns to the technologies in which she is an expert -- nonlinear optics and light diffusion. Using carefully filtered lasers channeled through a complex circuit of mirrors and lenses, she "hits" her sample -- barely a drop -- and measures the wavelength of the light that escapes from it. With this she can detect whether or not there are nanoscopic molecules on the interface between the oil and the water.

The precision of the observations "shows that negative charges exist even in a total absence of surface impurities, and thus the explanation put forward by my colleagues, which was derived from charge measurements and chemical titrations of the bulk liquids, doesn't hold up," says Roke. "We have developed a unique apparatus that can distinctly measure the interfacial structure of a layer on the sub-nanometer length scale that surrounds a droplet of oil in water. Thus, we can 'see' what is on the interface, and do not have to deduce it from comparing bulk properties, which is far less accurate."

Disproving a hypothesis isn't enough to explain a phenomenon, however. Roke is studying a promising avenue, that explores the intrinsic quantum nature of the water molecule itself, which might be responsible for the phenomenon. "The measurements we've made as part of this refutation could be used to try and prove this explanation," she says. "It's fascinating, because quantum effects (the smallest of the smallest) might be responsible for macroscopic charging effects that influence so many properties that relate to the functioning of the human body."

US District Judge?R. Brooke Jackson?also set May 5, 2014, as the earliest start date that any of the personal injury and wrongful death claims against Cinemark could proceed to trial.

Merging the cases and setting a tentative calendar for the litigation came during the first court hearing stemming from civil suits accusing?Texas-based?Cinemark USA?Inc of lax theater security in connection with the July 20 massacre.

Twelve people were killed and 58 wounded when a gunman opened fire on Cinemark patrons in?Aurora,Colorado, during a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises."

The suspect, 24-year-old former?neuroscience?graduate student?James Holmes, is charged with dozens of counts of murder and attempted murder. The criminal case against Holmes is in a preliminary stage with no trial date set. He has not yet entered a plea and defense lawyers have said in court that Holmes suffers from an unspecified mental illness.

Man accused of stealing Tim Allen's Chevy Impala

DENVER (AP) ? A man suspected of stealing one of Tim Allen's custom cars says the comedian left the keys so he could drive it to Denver.

Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said Monday that 34-year-old Faustino Ibarra is being held without bond while awaiting extradition to California after his arrest on Saturday.

In a jailhouse interview with KDVR-TV (http://bit.ly/TpJirK ), Ibarra claimed Allen adopted him years ago. Jackson said there is no evidence of any adoption.

Ibarra said Allen had left the door to his garage open along with the keys.

Police confirmed that the customized 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS belonged to the "Home Improvement" star but said it hadn't yet been reported stolen when it turned up in Denver.

Allen's publicist Marleah (mar-LEE-uh) Leslie said she wouldn't comment because it's a police matter.

Florida Water Management District May Sell Off Conservation Land

TAMPA -- Stung by a slashed budget, the agency that oversees water resources in West Central Florida is taking a hard look at its vast land holdings.

The Southwest Florida Water Management District wants to determine which parcels aren't aquifer recharge areas, wetlands or needed for flood control -- and if some sort of revenue can be squeezed from those lands.

The process could end with the agency selling off, leasing or trading some prime Florida wilderness.

Some environmental groups oppose the plan, saying dumping land to save money is not in the state's best interest.

The district owns nearly a half-million acres in 16 counties, with property from Citrus County to Charlotte County along the Gulf Coast and a few inland counties. Most of the property is vital to water resources: it recharges the aquifer, is used for flood control or is suitable for storing freshwater for consumption.

Selling the parcels outright is only one of the options open to the district, which has so far evaluated 261,000 acres in 10 counties, including Hillsborough. The process has uncovered 1,276 acres in 26 parcels that have been labeled surplus lands.

Selling Florida's wilderness is a travesty, said Cathy Harrelson, conservation chair of the Sierra Club's Suncoast Group. She blames the governor and Florida Legislature, which she says is responsible for the "wholesale abuse of water protection in this state."

Slashed budgets and a lack of emphasis on protecting the ecology have forced water management districts across the state to take the drastic action, she said.

"The idea that we Floridians spent good money for decades to purchase lands that were reviewed and vetted to be important ecologically to the state of Florida and then, in the throes of a depressed real estate market, to sell them off at reduced rate -- well, I don't see that as getting a good bang for our buck," Harrelson said.

District officials say any selloff would be small.

"At this point, only 0.5 percent of our lands have been recommended for surplus," said district spokeswoman Robyn Felix. She said the project's surplus lands do not provide direct water resource benefits, which is at the core of the district's mission.

Such lands were acquired in better economic times, when the district and was able to purchase large tracts of environmentally sensitive land, some of which included uplands that had nothing to do with water resources.

Such deals mostly occurred when landowners had not been willing to divide a property offered for sale so the district bought the entire parcel. In some cases, the upland portions were leased to cattle concerns or molded into wildlife recreational areas.

The district has appointed a surplus lands subcommittee to direct the staff and to review recommendations before making its own proposals to the governing board. If approved by the subcommittee, the recommendation would be sent to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for approval.

If approved by the DEP, the recommendation would go to the full 13-member governing board.

Parcels in Hillsborough are scattered along the Tampa Bypass Canal, and two large tracts lie southwest of the corner of Lithia-Pinecrest Road and State Road 39 in the 5,515-acre Chito Branch Reserve in eastern Hillsborough.

Some along the canal are small, only a fraction of an acre, while others range up to 12 acres. The two tracts on the Chito Branch Reserve, the site of Tampa Bay Water's C.W. Bill Young Regional Reservoir, are larger. One is 89 acres, the other 38 acres.

Most of those parcels currently are being reviewed by the DEP, Felix said, or being title researched.

Once all the red tape is navigated, the governing board has four options, Felix said.

The parcels can be sold or exchanged for land that "supports our core mission," she said, or can be deeded to local governments or retained as a conservation easement.

Revenue for lands sold may go to the district or to the programs under which the tracts initially were purchased, like Save Our Rivers, Preservation 2000 or Florida Forever. Some of the programs required the sale money to pay down state bonds used to make the purchases.

The district has no plans to buy additional land, Felix said.

Public hearings have been held, but the public still has an opportunity to be heard. Comments are being accepted on the district's website, www.sfwmd.gov.

Among the public's concerns was the future land use of property that ends up being sold. Some landowners purchased their property knowing they were adjacent to wildlife preserves and wanted assurances condominiums wouldn't be built or phosphate mines dug next to their homes.

The district said it can restrict, as a condition of sale, the types of uses allowed on the property by retaining a conservation easement and/or development rights. The restrictions would allow for agricultural use of the land but limit development.

Once the first round of dealing with surplus lands is over, the district will go back to take a look at properties it co-owns with other governmental agencies "to see if we can find additional management efficiencies," Felix said.

"We are trying to improve efficiencies in how we manage our lands." ___

Cyber Monday no longer a one-day tradition

Experts say online sales are expected to rise by 12 percent as millions of Americans hunt for holiday gift deals during the biggest Web shopping day of the year. NBC's Diana Alvear reports from an Amazon fulfillment center in Phoenix, Ariz.

By Martha C. White

Maybe ?Cyber Week? would be a better name.

Just as Black Friday spilled over into Thanksgiving night, Cyber Monday has gone from being a one-day event to a tentpole for more than a week?s worth of promotions and discounts. Online sales on Thanksgiving, historically not a banner day for e-commerce, jumped 17 percent, according to research conducted by IBM. On Black Friday, online sales grew by 21 percent.

As of noon ET on Cyber Monday, onlines sales were up 24.1 percent compared to last year, according to data from??International Business Machines Corp. In 2011, the early Cyber Monday year-over-year growth was 15 percent. IBM tracks transaction data from 500 U.S. retail websites.

This year?s kickoff to the holiday shopping season was intensely competitive, with retailers offering price-matching and pricing merchandise aggressively. Shoppers responded, spending $59.1 billion over Black Friday weekend, according to the National Retail Federation. Research company comScore said online shoppers spent a record $1 billion on Black Friday and predicted that today?s sales will hit $1.5 billion.

For the past couple of years, stores have pushed their Black Friday openings earlier in a bid to get shoppers off their computers and into stores. With stores opening as early as 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving this year, online retail upped the ante and started promotional blitzes even earlier.

Cyber Monday was first conceived in 2005, two years before the iPhone even existed. Today, ubiquity of smartphones and tablets also makes this spillover inevitable, as users comparison-shopped electronically even while in brick-and-mortar stores over the long weekend. And thanks to widespread penetration of residential broadband access, Americans don?t have to wait to get back to the office on Monday to have the entire Internet at their fingertips.

?Consumers shopped in store, online and on mobile devices simultaneously to get the best bargains,? IBM?s report noted.

?[Cyber Monday] continues to be strong, and what's happening is that we're seeing just more shift to the web channel overall even on other days like Black Friday and Thanksgiving,? said Forrester Research analyst Sucharita Mulpuru.

Amazon.com is a big likely winner for Cyber Monday sales, said Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst at the NPD Group. ?They?re doing a really good job of suggestive selling. They?re making the site much more efficient,? he said. ?You have to basically put them in the forefront.?

Analysts had high hopes for big-box stores including Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy, and said retailers with a strong online counterpart to their physical stores, like J. Crew, Ann Taylor, Apple and Williams-Sonoma, were in a good position to take advantage of Cyber Monday shopping.?

In an interview with CNBC Europe, Eric Abensur, group CEO of Venda, said that savvy retailers could avoid the threat of cannibalizing sales by using online and mobile promotions to drive customers to their physical stores, while other analysts said the strong showing over the weekend could be at today?s expense.

?Our sense is that while today is still the major day of the cyber period, it may not be off-the-charts historic,? said Joe Feldman, a senior analyst at Telsey Advisory Group. Feldman said overall spending is likely to grow over last year, but consumers are spreading out their purchases over a much longer time period than before.

?What we?re seeing is the front loading of the holiday business,? Cohen said. He said the early promotional hype could backfire if consumers? appetite for spending fades. ?They?ve sort of shot themselves in the foot.?

But Andrew Lipsman, vice president of industry analysis at comScore, Inc., disagreed with that assessment. ?I think it's a misconception that Thanksgiving or Black Friday promotions must pull from Cyber Monday,? he said. ?They may pull dollars from later in the season or represent incremental spending.?

NHL cancels games through Dec. 14, All-Star game

(AP) ? The NHL has called off all games through Dec. 14, plus the 2013 NHL All-Star Weekend scheduled for Jan. 26-27 in Columbus, Ohio.

The league made the announcement Friday, the 69th day of the NHL's lockout of its players.

The new cancellations come as little surprise. The two sides had an unproductive negotiating session on Wednesday that produced no movement to break an impasse over splitting more than $3 billion in revenue and also player contracts.

"We've identified what's important to players, but they seem to be so far at least unwilling to treat those concerns in a serious way," union head Donald Fehr said after the last round of talks, at which the union presented a new proposal to the league.

A total of 422 regular-season games, more than 34 percent of the season, have now been lost.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said losing the 2013 NHL All-Star Weekend in Columbus is "extremely disappointing."

"We feel badly for NHL fans and particularly those in Columbus, and we intend to work closely with the Blue Jackets organization to return the NHL All-Star events to Columbus and their fans as quickly as possible," Daly said in a statement Friday.

The Columbus Blue jackets, the club hosting the All-Star game and the skills competition, said fans with tickets to events on that weekend could receive refunds.

Palestine envoy says Beijing backs U.N. entry

BEIJING (Reuters) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' envoy to China said on Friday that Beijing backs their United Nations membership bid, a day after France indicated it would support a diplomatic upgrade for Palestine.

Bassam al-Salhi, in China on a three-day trip to discuss tensions in Gaza, echoed earlier calls from China's Foreign Ministry that Beijing would support Palestinian statehood and its entry into the United Nations.

"They (China) support the Palestinian right for ending occupation and building a Palestinian state ..and support the bid of the Palestinian membership in the United Nations," Salhi told Reuters in an interview after meeting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.

China's official Xinhua new agency quoted Yang as saying China "supports Palestine's entry into the United Nations and other international organizations and understands, respects and backs Palestine's bid for the U.N. observer status".

After their drive for full U.N. membership failed in the U.N. Security Council last year amid U.S. opposition, the Palestinians have launched a watered-down bid for recognition as a "non-member state", similar to the Vatican's U.N. status.

This request can be approved by the 193-nation U.N. General Assembly and seems certain to pass.

Washington says it favors eventual statehood for the Palestinians, but wants it to come as a result of negotiations with Israel. The United States can block full recognition of Palestine as a U.N. member at the Security Council, where it has a veto.

On Thursday, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius indicated support, reminding the French Senate of a campaign promise for international recognition of a Palestinian state made by President Francois Hollande.

Beijing has kept close ties with the Palestinians for decades, but in recent years, it has cultivated stronger relations with Israel, especially in the field of defense.

Salhi downplayed China's new ties while lashing out at the United States, saying Beijing has played an "active and vital" role on Palestine's behalf.

"We could not ask China not to make these ties (with Israel). What we need is more balance from all the international community," Salhi said, adding that Washington had "given nothing in the past 15 or 16 years".

A permanent member of the U.N. Security Council with veto powers, China has kept a low profile in Middle East diplomacy, and had little success in off-and-on attempts over the years to mediate in the Israeli-Palestinian issue.

China's Foreign Ministry has repeatedly called for both sides to resume peace talks, and said it was concerned about Israel's recent large-scale military operations around Gaza.

Shares in the social media and gaming platform were up 7% at $11.31 at the close of trading.?YY had priced its shares at the lower end of an earlier stated range of $10.50 to $12.50.

YY?s IPO, the first of a Chinese company in the US since April, is a test for other Chinese companies who have encountered major investor skepticism in the wake of high-profile accounting controversies. The number of Chinese IPOs in the US has gone from 41 in 2010 to 12 in 2011. In 2012 there has only been one, not counting YY?s: Vipshop Holdings, a flash sale website that raised almost 40% less than it sought. Other Chinese companies like China Auto and Shanda Cloudery had to scrap their plans for IPOs because of poor investor sentiment.

Investors have been wary of the transparency and quality of Chinese companies after a series of accounting scandals hit dozens of Chinese companies that had listed in the US through ?reverse takeovers,? going public via taking over a US shell company. Chinese companies are also hesitant to list overseas and are waiting instead for signs of new policies?from the country?s new leadership team announced last week.?But now YY may have broken through some of that, inspiring other Chinese startups?to follow in its step.

Whether shares in YY will continue to do well depends on its growth and level of transparency going forward. YY?s free online platform has 400 million registered users who talk with each other via voice, video and text. The company had net income of ?56.0 million ($8.9 million) in the nine months ended September 30, 2012, up from a loss of ?83.2 million in 2011, according to its prospectus. It?claims to have a market share of 84% of the rather niche market of ?online group voice communications in China??in terms of user time.

Concerns about YY include the fact that it only became profitable this year. From 2009 to 2011 (the company was founded in 2008), the company?s losses were ?50 million to ?80 million. Also, YY?is dependent on its games services, where users buy tokens to play. Its games component was 42.3% of total revenue for the year through the end of September. Other major Chinese internet companies like Tencent and Qihoo also host web games. If YY?s relationship with outside game developers falters and affects its pricing or selection, the entire business will feel it.?Also,?the corporate?structure?(p.5) could eventually?put off some investors. A dual stock class structure means that existing shareholders will control 98.3% of votes in YY after the IPO, leaving public investors just 1.7%.

YY itself acknowledges that its recent growth rates aren?t guaranteed going forward. ?We have experienced a period of significant rapid growth and expansion that has placed? significant strain on our management and resources. We cannot assure you that this level of significant growth will be sustainable or achieved at all in the future,? the company writes in its prospectus (p. 16). Even so, the roughly $70 million in net proceeds?(p. 67) going to YY from the IPO should help.
