NASA examines Hurricane Sandy as it affects the Eastern U.S.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? On Monday, Oct. 29, Hurricane Sandy was ravaging the Mid-Atlantic with heavy rains and tropical storm force winds as it closed in for landfall. Earlier, NASA's CloudSat satellite passed over Hurricane Sandy and its radar dissected the storm get a profile or sideways look at the storm. NASA's Aqua satellite provided an infrared view of the cloud tops and NOAA's GOES-13 satellite showed the extent of the storm. The National Hurricane Center reported at 11 a.m. EDT on Oct. 29 that Hurricane Sandy is "expected to bring life-threatening storm surge and coastal hurricane winds plus heavy Appalachian snows."

CloudSat Provides a Profile of Hurricane Sandy

To understand the structure, extent and behavior of Sandy, NASA's CloudSat passed over Sandy at 1832 UTC (10:32 a.m. EDT) on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, when the storm was about 335.5 miles (540 km) southeast of Charleston, S.C. CloudSat data was used to create a profile image of Hurricane Sandy by Shigeru Suzuki at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

At the time of the image Sandy's maximum sustained winds were near 75 mph and Sandy had a minimum pressure of 961 millibars making the storm a Category 1 hurricane. Hurricane Sandy was moving slowly to the northeast at 11 mph almost parallel to the southeast United States coast and directly traversing the Gulf Stream.

CloudSat passed over Sandy just west of the hurricane's inner core. Light to moderate precipitation associated with parts of the outer bands of Hurricane Sandy were moving on shore into parts of North Carolina where CloudSat intersected the system. CloudSat showed heavier showers and thunderstorms further south and east of the Atlantic coastline over the open water.

"The CloudSat signal tends to attenuate or dampen in these areas of heavier convection when rain drops become larger than 3 mm (0.11 inch) in diameter," said Natalie Tourville, a researcher who works with CloudSat data at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colo. "The cloud shield associated with Hurricane Sandy extended well over 1,000 km from the storm center covering parts of eastern Kentucky and Tennessee and Virginia and West Virginia with mid and high level cloudiness areas of cirrus and altocumulus," she said.

Sandy Pounding the Mid-Atlantic on Oct. 29

On Oct. 29 at 1 a.m. EDT the National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted that the center of Hurricane Sandy was located near latitude 37.5 north and longitude 71.5 west. This was about 260 miles (415 km) south-southeast of New York City, and 205 miles (330 km) southeast of Atlantic City, N.J. Sandy was moving north-northwest at 18 mph. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 90 mph (140 kph).

According to the National Hurricane Center, hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 485 miles (780 km). Sustained tropical-storm-force winds are occurring along the coasts of southern New Jersey, Delaware, and eastern Virginia, and extend as far inland as the central and southern Chesapeake Bay.

The minimum central pressure estimated from hurricane hunter Aircraft data is 943 millibars, which dropped from 946 millibars at 8 a.m. EDT. A drop in atmospheric pressure indicates intensification.

NHC noted that surge-related flooding depends on the relative timing of the surge and the tidal cycle and can vary greatly over short distances. Because of Sandy's large wind field, elevated water levels could span multiple tide cycles resulting in repeated and extended periods of coastal and bayside flooding. Dangerous surf conditions will continue from Florida through New England for the next couple of days.

NOAA's GOES-13 Satellite Shows Sandy's Extent

NOAA's GOES-13 satellite captured a visible image of Hurricane Sandy battering the U.S. East coast on Monday, Oct. 29 at 9:10 a.m. EDT that showed the immense extent of the storm. The image was created by the NASA GOES Project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. Tropical Storm force winds extend almost 500 miles from the center making it almost 1,000 miles in diameter.

Other watches and warnings for gale, storm and high winds are in force to the north of the tropical storm warning area and issued by the National Weather Service. Hurricane local statements have also been issued for those areas under tropical storm warning.

NASA's Aqua Satellite Infrared Data Shows Sandy's Strength

Infrared satellite imagery provides temperature data to forecasters that identify the cloud heights and strength of different parts of a storm. Basically, the higher the cloud top is, the colder the temperature, and the stronger the storm. Strongest storms have the potential for the heaviest rainfall rates.

To measure those cloud top temperatures, NASA uses the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite. The AIRS instrument captured infrared imagery of Hurricane Sandy on Monday, Oct. 29 at 0711 UTC (3:11 a.m. EDT) that showed some strong thunderstorms and the extent of Sandy's reach from the Carolinas into the Ohio Valley and eastern Canada. The thunderstorms in the purple areas were reaching high into the troposphere where cloud top temperatures are as cold as -63 Fahrenheit (-52 Celsius).

Winds from Hurricane Sandy

At 11 a.m. EDT on Oct. 29, the National Hurricane Center said that Hurricane-force winds are expected along the U.S. East Coast between Chincoteague, Va.and Chatham, Mass. This Includes the Tidal Potomac from Cobb Island to Smith Point, the middle and upper Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay and the coasts of the northern Delmarva Peninsula, New Jersey, the New York City area, Long Island, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Tropical-storm-force winds are expected north of Chatham to Merrimack River Mass., the lower Chesapeake Bay and south of Chincoteague, Va. to Duck, N.C., the northern endpoint of the Tropical Storm Warning.

Rain and Snow Expected from Sandy

Hurricane Sandy is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the Mid-Atlantic and northeastern U.S., and snowfall to the mountain areas.

The National Hurricane Center bulletin on Oct. 29 at 8 a.m. EDT, noted that rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected over far northeastern N.C. with isolated maximum totals of 8 inches possible. Rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches are expected over portions of the Mid-Atlantic States, including the Delmarva Peninsula with isolated maximum amounts of 12 inches possible. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches with isolated maximum amounts of 5 inches are possible from the southern tier of New York state northeastward through New England.

Snowfall is another expectation from Sandy as Arctic air sits to the west. Blizzard warnings are posted from western Maryland to southwestern Virginia today. Snow accumulations of 2 to 3 feet are expected in the mountains of W.Va. with locally higher totals today through Wed., Oct. 31. Between 1to 2 feet of snow is expected in the mountains of southwestern Va. to the Ky. Border with 12 to 18 inches of snow in the mountains near the N.C. and Tenn. border and in the mountains of Western Md.

Smith's 'fantastic game' helps 49ers carve up Cards

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Three touchdown passes, one incomplete pass.

Not a bad night for Alex Smith, and it could have been better, considering that the one incomplete pass was dropped by a wide-open receiver.

The San Francisco quarterback completed 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns ? two to Michael Crabtree and one to Randy Moss ? to help San Francisco flatten the Arizona Cardinals 24-3 on Monday night.

"Eighteen of 19, I have never seen that," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "How important for your quarterback to play very well? It is very important and I don't know how you play much better. It was a fantastic game by him."

Arizona defensive tackle Darnell Dockett could hardly believe what Smith had done.

"Everyone's surprised. My 5-year-old son's surprised," Dockett said, "but at the end of the day it wasn't like he had to make the long perfect throws. He had some guys open and we missed some tackles and they made plays."

Smith said he had no idea his stats were that good.

"Which is a good thing," he said. "I don't want to think about my stats or incompletions or anything like that. I was kind of in a good rhythm, the whole offense was. "

Smith has withstood more than his share of criticism he was the No. 1 overall pick in the draft in 2005. He was not interested in calling this a statement performance.

"At this point I don't care," he said. "if you ask me a few years ago, yeah maybe, but at this point I don't really care. I am concerned about winning. The guys in the locker room know what I am about and that is what really matters."

As for reports he had lost his confidence, Smith said, "It was in my closet. I found it."

Smith was 14 of 15 for 146 yards and two touchdowns, both to Crabtree, as the 49ers built a 17-0 halftime lead.

Moss caught a 47-yard TD pass, dodging tacklers down the sideline on a play that seemed to turn back the clock to the receiver's prime. With the catch, he tied Terrell Owens for fourth on the NFL career touchdown list with 156.

Smith, who tied a career high with the three touchdown passes, spread out his completions to 10 receivers. Crabtree led the way with five catches for 72 yards.

Arizona's defense, supposed to be the team's strength, missed tackle after tackle in an embarrassing nationally televised performance at home. The 24 points were the most allowed by the Cardinals this season.

"This was a big test for us, and everyone saw how it went," Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "It was disappointing to say the least."

Quarterback John Skelton called the loss "embarrassing" and "humiliating."

Led by Smith's near-perfect precision passing, the 49ers methodically dominated from the start. He had the best completion percentage of his career, and he would have been perfect had Delanie Walker not dropped the ball when he was wide open on a crossing route in the first half.

A 10-play, 77-yard drive that consumed just over 6 minutes of the first quarter put San Francisco up 7-0. On third-and-goal from the 3, Smith threw a sidelines pass to Crabtree, who outfought Patrick Peterson for the ball and the touchdown.

A flurry missed tackles, most notably an open-field whiff by Sam Acho, helped Ted Ginn Jr. return a punt 35 yards to the Arizona 45 in the second quarter. Daryl Washington sacked Smith to help set up a third-and-23 from the Arizona 46. But Smith found Crabtree over the middle for 22 yards, just a yard shy of the first down. David Akers' 43 yard field goal made it 10-0 with 5:58 left in the half.

Crabtree beat Peterson again for San Francisco's second touchdown. Smith threw over the middle to the receiver, who caught the ball, then fooled Peterson with an inside move into the end zone to make it 17-0 with 1:41 left in the half. The 49ers drove 68 yards in eight plays, again overcoming a sack, this one by Calais Campbell, that made it second-and-goal from the 16. Smith threw 7 yards to Mario Manningham to set up the TD toss to Crabtree.

The Cardinals were booed off the field by the home crowd at the half.

Things didn't get any better for the home team in the third quarter. On third-and-9, Smith threw 30 yards to Crabtree, who evaded a host of tacklers. Then on third-and-8, Smith tossed a short pass to Moss, who sidestepped a series of would-be defenders all the way to the end zone, putting San Francisco ahead 24-0 with 7:27 left in the third quarter.

The Cardinals averted a shutout with Jay Feely's 28-yard field goal

John Skelton, making his second start since Kevin Kolb went down with rib injuries, completed 32 of 52 passes for 290 yards, often overthrowing receivers. The Cardinals rushed for just 7 yards in nine attempts against the 49ers, who entered the game as the No. 1-ranked defense in the NFL, No. 2 against the run.

Arizona's final possession ended when Larry Fitzgerald was stopped at the 1.

Massachusetts closes third pharmacy since meningitis outbreak

BOSTON (Reuters) - Massachusetts regulators shut down a pharmacy on Sunday after a surprise inspection raised concerns about the sterility of its drugs, in the third such closure since a deadly meningitis outbreak caused by contaminated drugs from another pharmacy in the state.

The latest pharmacy to be closed, Infusion Resource, is not affiliated with New England Compounding Center, the company linked to the outbreak, officials said.

Infusion Resource in Waltham was closed after inspectors last week found "significant issues" and "expressed concerns for the sterility of products," said Madeleine Biondolillo, director of the state's Bureau of Healthcare Safety and Quality.

No contaminated drugs were found at Infusion Resource, but 40 patients and their doctors were asked to return any medications they received from the company, she said.

Massachusetts regulators have come under fire after contaminated drugs from NECC, based in Framingham, were cited as the cause of the outbreak which has so far killed 25 people and sickened another 337 in 18 states.

The state is conducting inspections of all compounding pharmacies which handle sterile medications in the wake of the deadly national meningitis outbreak.

The two pharmacies shut down earlier were NECC itself, which was closed on October 3, and a sister company of NECC, called Ameridose, that closed voluntarily for inspections on October 19.

Bernard Lambrese, CEO of Infusion Resource, said in a statement he wanted to reassure "patients and the general public of the safety, purity and efficacy" of solutions produced at his company's Waltham pharmacy. "Patient safety is something we take very seriously," he said.

Lauren Smith, interim commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, told reporters the ongoing state-wide inspections are part of "a series of aggressive and necessary actions to protect public safety and enhance oversight of this industry" following the national meningitis outbreak.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Friday it found "greenish black foreign matter" and other contaminants in an injectable steroid produced by NECC. It also found that vials from the same bin of the steroid contained what appeared to be a "white filamentous material," according to the report released by the FDA following inspections of the facility in October.

Armstrong did break the rules, not only helped others to do the same but bullied them into it, worked to undermine the testing procedures, used the false narrative that he had succeeded as a cancer survivor on raw determination and strength of character to make millions of dollars for himself and to persuade donors to give to his charity on false pretenses, and lied to the press, his sport, his fans and the public about his innocence. Of course stripping him of his titles and his endorsement contracts constitute justice.

Having established that he believes that such misconduct as lying, cheating, fraud and inducing others to break rules and laws for one?s own gain does not warrant punishment, Professor Allenby launches a breathtaking series of ethically or factually flawed arguments:

1.? Everybody?s cheating in sports, so we should ?get over it.? ?In an earlier time,? he writes, ?rules limiting the use of such technology may have been a brave attempt to prevent cheating. Now, they are increasingly ineffectual. Humans are becoming a design space. That athletes are on the cutting edge of this engineering domain is neither a prediction nor a threat. It is the status quo.? ?Allenby?s argument would extend to allowing students to plagiarize material on the web and present it as their own as well. The theory that the ?status quo? must be accepted as the ethical starting point is systemically suicidal as well as philosophically invalid. The purpose of ethics is to make things better. The author?s assessment of the status quo regarding sports is also false: everybody in sports are not cheating. It is true that virtually everybody in Lance Armstrong?s sport is cheating, thanks in great part to Lance Armstrong, and the sport is in tatters as a result.

This is also the first appearance of Allenby?s bias. His field is engineering and technology; naturally he believes that more is better. He and his colleagues are the people who develop the technologies athletes use to cheat. Of course he thinks they should be allowed to do it openly and legally, and the more the better.

2. What matters most in sports is levels of performance. ?Can you imagine Babe Ruth using a low-oxygen chamber that simulated a high-altitude environment to increase his red-blood-cell count and improve his respiratory system?s efficiency? That?s just one new way a player can get an edge,? Allenby writes.

Wow, how exciting. I think it?s more impressive to realize that Babe Ruth outperformed his competition, re-wrote the record book, transformed his sport and thrilled a nation as an undisciplined, sometimes drunk, poorly-conditioned orphan out of the slums of Baltimore using nothing more than the talents he was born with and the skills he perfected with practice and determination. Allenby really thinks that sports lovers care most about how well athletes can perform. Undoubtedly, some would be happy to watch freaks and robots compete, but the love of sports is fueled in most fans with admiration for human beings competing using their own abilities, perfected to the level that they can perfect them, without artificial, not to mention surreptitious, enhancements.

3. ?Why not add drugs and other technologies to the list of legal enhancements, especially when most of us are enhancing our workplace concentration with a morning coffee or energy shot?? Yes, this educator, scholar and lawyer really makes this fatuous and hackneyed argument. To begin with, it?s a non sequitur. How does the widespread use of coffee argue for the legalization of human growth hormone? At best, it is a poor excuse for allowing amphetamines in sports, so athletes can be alert too. The real foolishness of this argument is that most people?s performance in the workplace isn?t a competition in which fairness the appearance of integrity is paramount. Nor does a cup of coffee or two translate into success or failure, with non-coffee drinkers doomed to the latter.

4. False definition of the opposing position.? Ah, what unethical argument would be complete without a straw man? ?Mischaracterizing a fundamental change in sports as merely individual violations of the rules has serious consequences,? writes Allenby. ??For example, this thinking has led to inadequate research on the risks of enhancement technologies, especially new ones. Why research something that can?t be used?? Who has ever characterized the problem of cheating in sports or anywhere as ?merely individual violations?? ?It is a cultural problem, created by societal emphasis on tangible and monetary rewards over values and character, nurtured by weak leadership and negligent oversight, and endorsed by irresponsible authorities like Allenby.

5. ?My anecdotal class surveys show that students have significant skepticism about the reported side effects of such treatments and drugs, as well as perceptions of bias among regulators against enhancement. As a result of such attitudes, there?s a tendency to play down the risks of some technologies. Call it the ?Reefer Madness? response ? ignoring real risks because you think the danger is exaggerated. This is ignorance born of prohibition.? I give the professor kudos for a truly original crack-pot justification. Make something legal so you can prove that it?s more dangerous than we already think it is. Bravo! Those who resent authority prohibiting any conduct will naturally rationalize their violation of the prohibition by questioning the legitimacy of the reasons behind the prohibition, whether the conduct is heroin use, child labor or discrimination against gays. Allenby?s solution: legalize the conduct. Then scientists will be motivated to prove that the regulators were right all along!

6. Hey, we do worse than this already! Finally, Allenby?s thesis and reasoning rock bottom with the full-throated endorsement of the most nauseating rationalization of them all: ?It?s not the worst thing.?* He writes, ?If we allow football players to take violent hits and suffer concussions so that we might be entertained, why not allow them to use substances that might cause them health problems? It?s their decision.?? Why? Because it is wrong, that?s why. It is wrong to induce athletes to harm themselves by making it profitable for them to do so. We shouldn?t allow football players to take violent hits, suffer concussions, and be cognitively and critically damaged, their lives shortened and their family life devastated, ?so that we might be entertained.? Educating the public so that it understands that is what applying ethics to sports is supposed to accomplish. Allenby, the ethics expert, argues instead that we should encourage more athletes to harm themselves for our amusement, because, after all, allowing performance enhancing drugs may not destroy as many lives as the NFL?s concussions.

7. This is an ethics expert who doesn?t comprehend the importance of integrity to sports, and doesn?t think anyone else does. He writes,

?In professional sports, normal people do not compete normally. We watch athletes who are enhanced ? through top-notch training, equipment and sometimes illegal substances ? compete for our amusement. And, despite our sanctimonious claims that this is wrong, we like it that way. So we do athletes a deep disservice by clinging to our whimsical illusion of reality at the cost of their livelihood. If you yearn to watch ?purer? athletes, check out a Division III football game. Visit the minor league ballpark near you. Set up an amateur league. Better yet, train for a marathon sans enhancement. But don?t force the Tour de France to cling to outdated ideas of how athletes pedaling for their professional lives should behave. Cyclists have enhanced, are enhancing now and will continue to enhance.?

And cycling, as a spectator sport, is reeling. Fans want to know who the better athlete is, not who has the best chemist. Sure, there is a significant segment of the sports viewing public that doesn?t care about integrity and character; look at the popularity of professional wrestling. Integrity and character, however, are inseparable from sport, and the public does care about them, even if Allenby doesn?t. Declaring cheating to be legal won?t necessarily stop a practice from being viewed as wrong and corrosive to a sport and its spirit.

FREMONT, Calif. (AP) ? Learning how to play tennis is hard enough. Now try it when you can't see.

That's what students are doing at the California School for the Blind. They're learning a form of tennis adapted for the visually impaired ? and expanding the boundaries of what the blind can do.

The state-supported campus in Fremont is one of three American schools for the blind that recently began teaching adapted tennis, which was invented in Japan in the 1980s. A nonprofit group called Tennis Serves is working to promote the sport throughout the U.S.

"I didn't know someone with no vision could play tennis until I came to this school," said a 16-year-old student from Modesto named Jonathan. The school declined to provide his last name, citing a state law that protects the privacy of students with disabilities.

Blind tennis features a smaller court, lower net and junior tennis rackets with bigger heads and shorter handles. String is taped to the floor so players can feel the boundaries with their feet.

Players use a foam ball filled with metal beads that rattle on impact, allowing them to locate the ball when it hits the ground or racket. Once served, they have to return the ball before it bounces three times.

"The most difficult thing to teach is timing their stroke," said Sejal Vallabh, the 17-year-old founder of Tennis Serves. "Being able to listen to the ball, locate it using their sense of hearing and swing at the precise moment the ball goes by is really difficult to teach."

While experienced players can keep the ball in bounds and stage extended rallies, just hitting the ball over the net can be a challenge for beginners. During a recent visit to the California School for the Blind, students mostly swatted balls into the ground, the net and toward the ceiling and walls. Few balls were returned, but teachers say some are developing that capability.

Blind tennis was created in 1984 by Miyoshi Takei, a blind Japanese high school student who designed the adapted ball and helped the sport gain popularity in Japan and other Asian countries. He dominated blind tennis competitions until he was killed in a train accident last year at age 42.

Vallahb, an avid tennis player who is now a high school senior in Newton, Mass., first encountered blind tennis two years while doing a summer internship in Japan, where her grandmother lives.

"After I saw it there, I knew that I wanted to recreate the sport that I had seen back in the U.S.," she said, so she started Tennis Serves.

Vallabh first began teaching at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Mass. with help from her high school tennis teammates. She then helped start similar programs at Lighthouse International in New York City and the California School for the Blind.

Vallabh is working with engineering students at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Calif. to design a ball that continuously beeps to make it easier for blind players to track it.

At the California School for the Blind, staff members said they were skeptical when Vallabh first approached them about teaching the adapted sport.

"We were thinking, 'How are we going to teach tennis?" said Mary Alice Ross, who teaches adapted physical education. "My colleague said, 'Tennis is like teaching football. It's not something we really do.'"

The California School for the Blind, which has about 90 students ages 5 to 22, offers many adapted sports activities and sports, including bowling, boating, swimming, hiking, ice-skating and goal-ball.

Tennis is one of the most difficult sports for the visually impaired, but it brings unique rewards, teachers say.

"When it comes to being able to play a sport which is commonly only played by people with good vision, it's a big self-esteem boost." said John Healy, a dorm counselor who teaches adapted tennis.

A 12-year-old student named Sebastian said he was surprised when he first heard about the adapted sport.

"Tennis? How could blind people play tennis?" he said. "But then I was like, blind people can do anything they want. If you set your mind to it, then you can do it."

Exercise May Delay Early Aging of People With Diabetes

Fitness training improves their cardiovascular health, preliminary study finds

FRIDAY, Oct. 19 (HealthDay News) -- Regular exercise may slow the premature aging of the cardiovascular system that occurs in people with type 2 diabetes, according to new research.

A healthy adult loses about 10 percent of fitness with each decade of life after age 40 or 50, but research shows that fitness levels in people with type 2 diabetes are about 20 percent lower than in healthy adults.

This accelerated loss of fitness increases the risk of early disability and death, said Amy Huebschmann, of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and colleagues.

"Not only do these patients have more trouble with exercise ... but also with activities of daily living, such as a simple stroll to the corner store," the researchers said in an American Physiological Society news release.

The investigators confirmed other research, however, that has found that regular exercise can slow premature cardiovascular aging in diabetes patients. The findings suggest that their fitness levels can improve by as much as 40 percent after 12 to 20 weeks of exercise training.

"In other words, these defects are not necessarily permanent," Huebschmann said. "They can be improved, which is great news."

Regular exercise, however, does not restore diabetes patients' fitness levels to those of healthy adults, according to the findings. The research was presented last week at an exercise conference in Colorado sponsored by the American Physiological Society, the American College of Sports Medicine and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology. Data and conclusions presented at medical meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal

Although exercise can benefit diabetes patients, it may be difficult for them to achieve the recommended 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise. Huebschmann and her colleagues are working on ways to help diabetes patients reach their exercise goals.

"Type 2 diabetes has a significant negative impact on health, but that impact can be improved with as simple an intervention as regular brisk walking or other physical activity that most people with diabetes can do," Huebschmann said.

More than 8 percent of the U.S. population has diabetes, mostly type 2, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With type 2 diabetes, the body can't properly process glucose, the main type of sugar in the blood.
