Information was pulled from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, census data, and other related reports. Based on Movoto?s research, the 10 hardest working cities are as follows:

Virginia Beach, Va.

While Seattle received the top overall ranking, the real estate company?s report also broke down the highest-ranking city in each analyzed category:
Longest work week: Houston ? 37.6 hours per week (based on a full-time work week of more than 35 hours)
Lowest unemployment rate: Seattle ? 4 percent
Longest commute time: Chicago ? 33.7 minutes each way
Most workers per household: New York ? 2.4 workers
Most volunteer hours outside of work: Oklahoma City ? 76.6 hours per person per year
Highest number of nights without adequate sleep: Columbus, Ohio ? 9.7 nights per month
Highest cost of living: San Francisco
Because this list only looks at the most populated cities in the nation, most of which are metropolitan areas, it may not provide an accurate picture of the average American worker. However, there is a high concentration of "hardworking cities" in Texas (7 out of 50) and California (8 out of 50), as these states each had two cities on CareerBliss' 2012 list of happiest cities to work in.

The wealthy are flocking to the beach this summer?and so is their money.
Real estate sales in Long Island's Hamptons hit a record in the second quarter, according to a report from brokerage firm Douglas Elliman and Miller Samuel, the appraisal and research firm. Sales for the quarter came to $1.145 billion, up 23 percent from last year's second quarter, which totaled $929.4 million.
The second-quarter total is the highest since Miller Samuel began tracking the Hamptons market in 2005, according to Jonathan Miller, the company's president and CEO.
"It was a surprisingly strong quarter," he said.
The average sale price in the Hamptons was $1.7 million?roughly the same as last year. But the number of homes available is falling fast?declining 13 percent in the quarter. The average sale price in Sagaponack hit $11 million, making it among the most expensive areas in the country.

Brokers say there were several factors driving sales. First, Wall Street and the financial services industry is seeing strong profits and compensation, which traditionally drives the Hamptons market.
Stronger stock markets have also boosted the fortunes of non-Wall Street buyers and investors looking for a place to invest their cash.

But Paul Brennan, a broker with Douglas Elliman in the Hamptons, said that many wealthy buyers pulled the trigger in the second quarter because of the sudden rise in interest rates, which also started driving up mortgage rates.
"They saw that spike and decided that it was time to get off the sidelines," he said. "They realized they might never have a better time to buy."
Among the big sales being talked about during the quarter was hedge fund manager Steven Cohen's purchase of a $60 million oceanfront home in East Hampton. While the deal was expected to close in the second quarter, it wasn't recorded in time for the second-quarter sales tally, Miller said. Cohen's hedge fund, SAC Capital Advisors, was charged with fraud and insider trading on Thursday.

The big strength in the quarter came from what Hamptons brokers call "entry level" homes?those priced between $1 million and $5 million. These homes accounted for about 40 percent of the sales total.

He added, "The idea that anyone could call themselves, under any circumstances and for any reason, Carlos Danger is a tribute to something about him."
Olbermann's self-titled show originates from Times Square studios in New York and debuts on Aug. 26 on ESPN2. Airing at 11 p.m. EDT, it will focus on the day's sports topics through a mix of commentary, interviews, contributors, panel discussions and highlights.
Olbermann said there is no content clause in his contract that would prevent him from talking politics, something he did for eight years as a prime-time host on MSNBC and for a year on Current TV ? two stints that ended poorly. He quit MSNBC and was taken off the air at Current TV and later sued.
"It's been wonderful not talking politics," he said. "It was a lot of work and it took a lot out of me."
Olbermann had his first rehearsal on Wednesday. The job brings him back to ESPN, where he worked from 1992-97 with some controversy.
"It will be a sportscast with my stamp on it," he said, adding that plans include a segment on the Worst Person in the Sports World and clips from his previous life on ESPN.

Olbermann noted that one of the people instrumental in bringing him back was ESPN executive Norby Williamson, a producer on his old "Sports Center" telecasts with whom he had "screaming matches."
"I'm listening, oh, just a little bit more than I used to to other people's ideas," Olbermann said.

Louisiana Tech University will receive over $1.4 million in grant funding from NASA's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), through an award to the Louisiana Board of Regents, to serve as the lead institution for research that investigates how high doses of space radiation during extended duration space missions will affect astronauts.
Dr. Niel Crews, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering in Louisiana Tech's College of Engineering and Science, will lead the research with assistance from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Grambling State University. The project titled, "Genetic Assessment of the Space Environment using MEMS Technologies," is funded at $750,000 by NASA's EPSCoR with a match from the Louisiana Board of Regents.
"I see this award as a powerful recognition of the research caliber of Louisiana Tech University," said Crews. "We were selected for funding, not because of our lofty words, but because of our extensive track record of quality research and high-impact technology development.
"This acclaim extends beyond the project investigators, but to the name of the university, and all the researchers and administrators who have sown the seeds of vision that have borne this recent fruit."
According to the project proposal, the world is pressing toward an extended human presence in space, but the high uncertainty associated with radiation risk to humans is currently prohibitive. Crews and his team will work to develop and test an instrument that automates the extraction and quantification of RNA from living cells in order to focus on the gene expression changes that cascade from irradiated cells in the human body through the surrounding tissue.
Furthermore, the proposed device will implement a non-destructive extraction technique to preserve culture viability, and will yield a spatial resolution of the gene expression map that does not now exist.
"Dr. Crews is one of our outstanding young faculty. He, along with Drs. (Pedro) Derosa and (Lee) Sawyer will be working together and are an excellent example of how our college integrates engineering and science to produce outstanding research," said Dr. Hisham Hegab, interim dean for Louisiana Tech's College of Engineering and Science.
This is the first NASA EPSCoR grant that Louisiana Tech has received as a lead institution.

A wholly owned subsidiary of Radnor, Pa.-based Penn Virginia Corp. (NYSE: PVA) made the purchase for $361 million in cash and $40 million in Penn Virginia common stock. The transaction closed during the second quarter.
The properties involved in the sale included 19,000 leasehold acres and Magnum Hunter?s operating and non-operating interests in wells in Gonzales and Lavaca counties.
After the transaction, Magnum Hunter still owns 7,000 Eagle Ford Shale leasehold acres, primarily in Fayette, Lee and Atascosa counties.
Magnum used cash from the sale to repay all its outstanding borrowings under a senior revolving credit line and for general corporate purposes. The deal was announced in April.

Now that Detroit is declaring bankruptcy, it must face its next challenge: time.

The process the city wants to follow calls for a financial restructuring plan to be approved by a federal bankruptcy judge ?as promptly as possible,? according to court papers filed Thursday. Emergency manager Kevyn Orr, working at the behest of Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R), said in the court filing that he wants the city to emerge from bankruptcy by September 2014, which is about when, under state law, the clock stops on his 18-month tenure. At that point, Mr. Orr can be replaced by a two-thirds majority vote of Detroit's city council.
?We are running out of time. There?s a lot of work to be done here even within those 15 months,? Orr told reporters at a press conference Friday. ?We?re dealing with 60 years of deferred [fiscal] maintenance in 15 months.?
The time frame will require Orr to submit evidence that supports his plan, as well as deal with objections. His negotiations with more than 40 labor unions will continue, as will talks with groups representing pension systems of current retirees. On top of it all, Orr will need to submit a two-year city budget and figure out ways to keep the cash flow going to support Detroit's emergency, health, and safety services in the coming months.
?That?s a pretty heavy burden to undertake. He needs to move quickly,? says Douglas Bernstein, a managing partner at Plunkett Cooney, a law firm outside Detroit that specializes in bankruptcy law.
Bankruptcy experts agree that the timeline is realistic. The city is asking for an Aug. 19 deadline for objecting parties to file their claims as to why Detroit is not eligible to declare Chapter 9 bankruptcy. From there, the city hopes to be cleared for restructuring by November. The city is also asking the court to appoint a committee to represent public-sector retirees not covered by unions.
?We asked some labor organizations ?will you represent these retirees,? and some of them said, ?No, we won?t.? So we will be fair,? Orr said.
Detroit is the largest US city ever to enter bankruptcy ? and its unfunded liabilities likewise are the largest ever seen in municipal finance. Orr?s office has already filed a 3,300-page list of creditors owed money from the city. Detroit is saddled with more than $18 billion in debt, including $3.5 billion in underfunded pension liabilities and $5.7 billion in other retiree benefits. Under Orr?s proposal, current retirees enrolled in the city?s health insurance system will be offered a new program that relies mainly on provisions of the US Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.
There are already signs that the timeline Orr has proposed may be hitting some speed bumps. On Friday, Ingham County Circuit Judge Rosemarie Aquilina ordered the city's bankruptcy petition withdrawn, saying it violates the part of the state constitution that protects the pensions of union workers. Judge Aquilina is presiding over lawsuits brought by unions and pension systems that say the pension benefits guaranteed to them under collective bargaining are vulnerable in federal court if Detroit?s bankruptcy petition is allowed to move forward.
?It?s cheating, sir, and it?s cheating good people who work,? the judge told Michigan Assistant Attorney General Brian Devlin on Friday.
Her order may potentially gum up Detroit's bankruptcy process, moving it now into the Michigan Court of Appeals. Legal skirmishes over state-versus-federal issues will likely bog down the process, says?Randye Soref, a bankruptcy attorney in Los Angeles who represented creditors when California's Orange County declared insolvency in 1994. ?If there?s going to be a fight every step of the way, it?s going to take longer. That?s just the process,? Ms. Soref says.
In the meantime, Orr said, the Motor City will continue to pay its bills, and it recently established a special hot line for vendors who have questions, or who have hit snags, about receiving payment.
?Going forward, it?s business as usual. We will pay our bills ? especially those that are critical,? he said.
Orr, a restructuring specialist from Washington whom the governor appointed as emergency manager in late March, dismissed critics who say his team did not do enough to negotiate agreements with creditors to stave off bankruptcy.
?What shocked me wasn?t the [debt] numbers. What shocked me was the tolerance for this behavior," Orr said of Detroit's practice of borrowing more and more to pay its creditors. "For decades, this has been going on ? and, at best, it was unorthodox. People were outraged at my appointment. I wish there was more outrage over the last 10, 20 years,? he said.?

Anyone who has investigated small business accounting software at all knows the name "QuickBooks." Long the market leader, QuickBooks has won numerous Editors' Choice awards from us, thanks to its usability and a smart set of accounting tools. The software family has been around since the early 90s, when QuickBooks for DOS was launched.
Over the years, the line has grown. QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions is the newest (though it's at least a decade old) member, and the most sophisticated. It looks and works exactly like the more junior versions of QuickBooks, which means it uses simplified language and a clean, attractive user interface and straightforward navigational tools to make accounting more understandable for non-accountants.
QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions, being the very top of the Intuit food chain, adds complexity and capacity in many areas. It's superior to the rest of the line in areas like pricing flexibility, inventory management and reporting. It can track tens of thousands of people, items, accounts, etc., and up to 30 employees can access it simultaneously.
That would imply that QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions can be used by companies large enough to have 30 people working on the financial books at the same time. It's unlikely that the application would be used by such a sizable business, given that it's not scalable; it's rooted to the desktop (unless it's hosted) without the benefit of a lot of comparable add-ons (it can integrate with options in the Intuit App Center, but they're not built to take advantage of midrange solutions, except for Salesforce) and it lacks some of the automation and depth offered by the midrange solutions I reviewed.
Bases Covered Like Sage 50 Quantum, QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions touches the low end of midrange accounting applications (though it doesn't have inventory management muscle to rival Sage 50 Quantum unless you pay for the Advanced Inventory module). It's gone about as far as it can go in terms of meeting small business bookkeeping needs without overwhelming its target market with too much.
Intuit has, therefore, for the past few years focused on giving users better access to their existing data and streamlining the interface. Its core is a solid double-entry, GAAP-compliant accounting solution, but as it faces the user, it replicates the tasks they were previously doing manually. It maintains a general ledger and provides record and transaction forms for managing accounts payable and receivable, inventory and payroll, and reports.
Because it's a desktop software product, though, it makes those financial chores faster and easier, and the results more accurate. Once you create a customer record using the templates provided, for example, you can insert that data anywhere it's needed?on an invoice, in a collection letter, in a report, etc., without ever having to type it in again. All of the program's individual elements are integrated, and they're designed to accelerate the daily workflow and ensure that accounting rules are followed, warning the user when something isn't being done correctly.
Above and Beyond QuickBooks Pro and Premier do all of those things. But Enterprise Solutions adds functionality and flexibility to every part of the product. Forms have more custom fields. You can work in two company files simultaneously and create consolidated financial statements. You can do more tasks on a global and/or multi-user level, like change price levels or set defaults, and adjust inventory or change sales tax rates. Pricing levels are far more flexible: You can establish hundreds of them.
Inventory management ?always the weakest area in Pro and Premier ? is much stronger. You can manage multiple warehouses and always know where your stock is down to the bin level.? Bar code scanning and serial or lot tracking are also available. It supports two costing methods: average cost and FIFO (Sage 50 Quantum and true midrange solutions offer more). QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions also supports connections to ODBC-compliant applications for custom report creation.
Have you wondered if it would be worth it to go back to school for a master's degree to help you get a boost in salary or a promotion? With the job market still sluggish, many professionals are going back to school. But will it really get you where you want to go?
It depends on whom you ask. Here, experts weigh in on both sides.
A master's degree will help you get ahead. Many say higher education absolutely would help you move up in your career. "Many entry level jobs today now require a master's and virtually all senior management and senior professional positions require a master's," says Brian D. Kelley, chief information officer at Portage County Information Technology Services. "Having a master's degree can increase your annual earning potential beyond your annual compensation without a master's. Other ways to get the same raise would be to obtain professional certifications related to your career field or through years of additional experience."
But don't underestimate experience. A master's may impress potential employers, but so will your experience, says Rosemary Guzman Hook, a certified career coach and executive recruiter at Hook The Talent, Inc. Combining the two can make you all the more appealing as a job candidate. "Master's degrees in general are not enough to move the needle for anyone charting a new path in life," Guzman Hook says. "There must be experience, practicums, internships or something that demonstrates the individual has more than just theoretical knowledge."
Guzman Hook says that once a person has experience, the master's degree will open more doors than a bachelor's.
On the other hand, master's degrees are overrated Others say that having a master's degree won't necessarily be worth the investment, and that may be the case if you work in an industry that values experience over educational background. For example, an advanced degree doesn't make a graphic designer more talented. Most companies would hire him or her based on a portfolio.
If you look at professionals in your industry and see few with advanced degrees, consider investing the time you would spend furthering your education into developing your skillset. That might mean signing up for continuing education courses, attending workshops and, of course, building your experience. This way, you save the money you would have spent on another degree, and you add to your resume with specific skills employers are looking for.
Entrepreneurship is another option. In looking at the price of an MBA, perhaps other ventures are worth considering for that chunk of change. If you've dreamed of starting your own business, consider doing that instead, says Alan Corey, author of "The Subversive Job Search: How to Overcome a Lousy Job, Sluggish Economy, and Useless Degree to Create a Six-Figure Career."
"Anyone in business world would agree that actively running your own company is a better education than reading about how to do work within one," Corey says. "Plus your entrepreneurship adventure can make you money fairly quickly, rather than an MBA which may help you land a job two years down the road."
How to get ahead. You don't have to cut back to part time at work to go back to school. "With many accredited colleges and universities offering online master's programs and accelerated master's programs, getting a master's degree is easier than ever before for those working a 40-hour job and trying to manage work-life balance," Kelley says.
Make sure it's worth it, though, because programs can come with a hefty price tag. Guzman Hook says the only time you should be willing to go into debt for an advanced degree is if it's with a top-10 school with a high track record of job placement. You want to be assured that the job you get after graduation will help you advance quickly, she says. Also, keep in mind that the connections you make - especially in business school - will also carry value and make that investment worthwhile.
And in a perfect world, your employer would offer education reimbursement to help you finance your higher education. Check with your human resources department to see if it's possible to get some or all of your education costs paid for by your employer.

Everyone passionate about the startup company funding ecosystem was overjoyed by the news last week that ?general solicitation? would soon be okay for startups looking for angel investors. With one fell stroke, the artificial networking inefficiency imposed by the ban on public communication would be gone. Entrepreneurs and accredited investors would be able to talk freely. Startups would have no impediments to tweeting, blogging, taking out Facebook ads, or engaging in any other kind of social media (or old media) to optimize both the chance to get funded and the chance to fully and expeditiously fill out financing rounds.
