With tornado season afoot, spotters get training

TULSA, Okla. ? Springtime is approaching in Oklahoma and that means it's time for storm spotter training.

A session took place Saturday at the University of Oklahoma at Tulsa campus.

Meteorologists, ham radio operators, storm spotters and weather hobbyists gathered for briefings on how to interpret severe weather.

National Weather Service warning coordination meteorologist Ed Calianese says similar sessions are planned throughout the area in the coming weeks.

The unofficial start of severe weather season is April 1.

Amateur radio operator Mark Griffin of Tulsa was among those on hand. On days with severe weather is among radio operators transmitting field reports so they can be used to warn the public.
