Last week I wrote a piece for Unwired View which asked:

Why is Samsung the only Android success story?

There were a good many tweets and comments on the piece. There was no consensus, but suggestions that many agreed on included:

  • Samsung's chip and display making capabilities in particular afford them sourcing, manufacturing and overall cost savings that no other Android maker can duplicate.
  • Samsung has truly global reach across developed and developing markets.
  • Samsung's copying of Apple and Apple's lawsuits against Samsung elevated Samsung products as direct competitors to iPhones, unlike all other Android devices.

Personally, I think we should not underestimate incompetence at other companies.

For another take, Javed Anwar offers a long post in the Times of India.

His view is more India-centric. Samsung, he notes, has been far more aggressive in offering a range of smartphones and flagship devices with the latest and greatest hardware throughout India.

I remember Galaxy S being available in India within days after it started rolling out globally. In fact, if I recall correctly, the phone was available in over 100 countries within days after the global launch.

When a product is available at the time the buzz is strongest, people tend to look forward to buying it.

The important bit to note here is that Samsung has performed the same drill with almost all its Galaxy phones. At least in India, major Samsung devices have hit the market within days of a global launch. In comparison, all other manufacturers take months to bring their devices here. For example, we are still waiting for LG Vu to arrive in the local markets.

This is point number one.

Now, point number two: Samsung?s strength lies in manufacturing. It makes pretty good chips in the form of Exynos. It makes NAND. It makes displays, including Super AMOLED ones. For its Android phones, Samsung has utilized its skills as a manufacturer very well. LG on the other hand has been poor at utilizing its strengths. Ditto for HTC that has not been able to capitalize on design despite having expertise in it. Samsung has been aggressive in pricing.?

As goes India so goes the rest of the world?

If so, then Apple needs to up its game. The company has long been hesitant to aggressively move into India.
