You asked, they answered: Ron Mooney, School Board candidate ...

1. Turnover of principals at Wood, Lincoln, Encinal and other schools have been high, how important do you think stable leadership is for schools?

I believe effective leadership is very important at each school site, and stability is a crucial part of that. As a parent of students that have attended two listed sites and as a Board member, I realize the difficulty in finding leadership that fits each sites with all the expected skills. While turnover can be frustrating in the short term, I believe it is more important to find the best leaders, whom we can support and develop for long-term leadership.

2. Describe your understanding of how Measure A funds have been allocated and what steps will you take to restore confidence in the voters who are angry about the way the funds generated by Measure A have been used?

Measure A funds have been allocated, and spent, exactly the way the ballot measure was stated. (Maintaining Small Class Sizes for grades K-3; Maintaining High Quality Neighborhood Elementary Schools; Secondary School Choice Initiative and AP Courses; Programs to Close the Achievement Gap; High School Athletics Programs; Enrichment Programs; Attract and Retain Excellent Teachers; Counseling and Student Support Services; Alameda Charter Schools; Technology; Adult Education)

It is frustrating to see intentional miss-statements about our spending and we try to correct them as best we can. By issuing regular reports, advising the stakeholders and news outlets of our financial picture including Measure A budgeting and actual spending, I hope we can communicate to all the facts to the community.

3. What criteria would you use to determine if a teacher was effective or ineffective, and based on that criteria, what should be done to ensure that the district only employs effective teachers.

This already is a subject of debate in the State and part of negotiations. We must agree on/find multiple fair measures to use on a consistent basis in order to determine effectiveness. These criteria must take into account the different styles and types of professional education strategies, not just have a single focus. Using agreed upon criteria, all staff will need to be trained, coached and evaluated in order to have the most effective teachers for our children. Using Master Teachers and administration, we should support the few ineffective teachers that we may have so that they may become more effective. I would encourage anyone to request a visit to our schools to see the wonderful teachers we have every day in Alameda!

4. What criteria would you use to determine if AUSD administration staff was effective or ineffective, and based on that criteria, what should be done to ensure that the district only employs effective administrators.

Very similar to teachers, administration evaluations need to involve fair and multiple measures that can be used on a consistent basis to determine effectiveness. These criteria must take into account the different styles and types of professional education strategies, as well as management skills need for the specific jobs. Using agreed upon criteria all staff will need to be trained, coached and evaluated to have the most effective administrators for our staff, children and community. Again, using managers and coaches we should support our staff to make sure we have only effective administrators.

5. If elected, what will you do to be proactive about securing adequate funding for our children? What outside-of-the-box ideas do you have to force the politicians to adequately fund our schools now?

I urge all to vote and actively support Propositions 30 and 38.

Unfortunately it seems that we must rely on the Courts to force Sacramento to change the way our schools are funded. That is what happened decades ago, and what AUSD and other districts are trying to do now with the Robles-Wong lawsuit. The reality is that it will be a long process, much too long, but hopefully in the coming years there will be some action by the Court or legislature to actual have some logic to the system and then adequate funding may follow.
Until the State economic picture dramatically improves, we need to continue to protect our schools with local funding. I have been advocating, working and volunteering for local funding for all of my time in Alameda, From the Alameda Education Foundation to PTA. Since 2000 I have given my best efforts to lead our parcel tax efforts to inform voters and the public about our needs, the funding from the State and the balance we must have to achieve the minimum education our students deserve. I meet with our State representatives, fellow local board members and advocates for education. I will continue those efforts, inside and outside of the system.

6. What single educational program and/or improvement will you push or recommend to better AUSD and describe the program and/or improvement.

Our public education system is complex especially across a K-12 district. Implementation of the Master Plan is what I am pushing for and is discussed in the next question.

7. In 2010, AUSD adopted a Master Plan, explain your understanding of the Master Plan and AUSD?s implementation of the stated goals.

I am proud that we established the Master Plan. It was a main goal of mine during the 2008 election, and I am proud that we held the many workshops around Alameda to discuss our public school system and what we wanted for our community. We have begun the implementation of the Master Plan in many ways, but still need to keep our focus on doing it well. The means reviewing and reporting progress as well as adjusting implementation, if needed.

The Master Plan called for neighborhood schools with innovative programs, holding high expectations of students and staff, ensuring we operate efficiently as possible and increasing local funding. These items were split into 8 areas where we have created Goals and Strategies for the coming years. This link http://www.alameda.k12.ca.us/images/stories/pdfs/master_plan/master_plan_2011-2015_table_document.pdf has them laid out for easy review.

We have already worked on increasing the efficiency of the Central Office. In addition, this year started the innovative programs at elementary schools (including the opening of the Maya Lin School), we have created the 10 Steps to Success goals, a reporting structure and of course passed Measure A thanks to so many community members stepping up to discuss the need and vote for our program.

8. As an elected official what is your specific role in promoting civic engagement as opposed to staff?s role?

My role is to make sure that we communicate as widely as possible the information regarding the school district to all stakeholders. To do this we must make sure policies are in place to give clear direction to staff, tools are available for efficient transmission and availability of information and to make sure staff is explaining the complexities of the numerous issues in as plain (non-technical) language as possible. We must have high expectations that our Superintendent, administrators and principals will help and lead the community engagement at their sites and throughout the District.

9. Who is funding your campaign and which groups and individuals have endorsed your candidacy?

I am funding my own campaign at this point, have not asked for groups to support me financially. My endorsements will be up on my website: www.ronmooney.net

Bonus Question: There are multiple seats available in the races for City Council, the School Board and the Hospital Board. Besides yourself, who will you be voting for in your race and why?

I will be voting for Niel Tam for School Board as over the past four years I have come to admire his quiet thoughtful and deep questioning of what our vision and goals are, need to be and where we are heading. His knowledge of the District, coming from over 40 years as a teacher and administrator provides such valuable information and at times contrast. I highly value his point of view and collaboration.

I will be voting for Mike Robles-Wong for School Board. I have seen Mike?s leadership to look at issues, ask deep questions, look for other views and then build consensus. His many years of experience, both work and civic, makes me confident he would be a fine member of the board.

In the past couple of days, I have seen a few emails from what could be best called funding brokers. They ?facilitate? deals between early stage companies and potential investors. All for a consulting fee, usually for a percentage of the amount of funding raised. They have connections to high net worth angel investors and relationships with venture capitalists. Typically the fees and the engagement are model on investment banking particularly as related to later stage M&A deals.

It?s not a surprise. It?s a well established model. The Lehman model (we all know how well Lehman Brothers worked out for the rest of us) is 5% on the first $1MM raised, 4% on the second $1MM, 3% on the third $1MM, and 1% for capital above $4MM. It changes with equity versus debt financing, reducing to a 0.5-2% fee on debt rounds.

And particularly in later stage deals and M&A it is probably more accepted (acceptable?). In the transaction there are 3 potential parties:

  • Startup
  • Funder
  • Broker/Finder

Typically the person contracting the broker pays the fees. This means that it?s either the VC paying the fee, but if you are the startup it means that you?re paying the fee. And that fee is either increasing your dilution or decreasing the amount of the round. You can look at it as just paying fees like you pay your accountant or lawyer. But why, oh, why are you willing to give up chunks of your company this early to do things you are capable of doing yourself.

What does a VC think about brokers/finders?

Jason Mendelson published his take on ?finders? back in 2007:

?Most venture firms don?t like the idea of brokers being involved and most venture financing documents have a clause that the company warrants that there are no brokers involved. Remember, the company?s money that is paying the broker is, in fact, the VC?s money that they invest in you.?

Jason continues ?good VCs have plenty of proprietary deal flow, so they aren?t relying on brokers to show them deals?. If you can?t get in front the right investors, you are probably doing it wrong. There are a very limited set of high tech, emerging?business?model, high potential growth investors in Canada. Need a??show me the money? list? There are other ways to raise your profile as a startup and get in front of investors. Andy Yang wrote a great piece about?getting the most out of AngelList?as a startup. If these channels aren?t working for you, you might want to go back and ask yourself is it the funders or is it me? What do I need to do to make my company more attractive to potential investors? Customer development? Product development? Etc.

How do you spell MBA?

We love to heckle MBAs, mostly because we?re all jealous that we don?t have one. But is it a requirement to raise funding.

?On the other hand, skills i bet won?t be important as much in the future:

  • having (only) a big rolodex or (offline) network
  • having a traditional MBA or investment banking background

Both of these are still important, but will become commoditized and marginalized by the availability of such information from online systems for social networks & reputation, and by the relentless advance of access to capital from a variety of channels.? ? Dave McClure

No one is arguing that brokers shouldn?t get paid. The model is relevant. People work hard to build trust, reputation, networks and knowledge. With later stage deals the relationship, private placements, increased valuations, connections with CEOs and funders, it makes sense. But as Dave McClure rightly points out the value of the specific skills are changing. Particularly at the very earliest stage.

There is a great discussion on OnStartups about the finder?s fees. You can see the tension between entrepreneurs and investment bankers.

Social Anti-Proof

I don?t like finder?s fees for early investment rounds. Whether you call that seed and series A, I don?t know. I just don?t like seeing that capital taken out of the hands of the entrepreneur from operations. So just don?t do it.

As the company matures, the existing investment banking model doesn?t feel wrong. Many of the relationships, matchmaking, guidance feels like something you pay for, only after the deal closes. I feel like really early stage companies that have hired a broker must be broken, i.e., there must be something fundamentally wrong with the ?team, the market, the advisors, etc. if they are unable that might explain why they are having difficulty raising an early round.

So it?s very wrong early. Ok later.

A Love that Fuels Social Action ? Together for Adoption

by Dan Cruver Published Sep 24, 2012

Do we really have time for the robust study of theology when there are so many issues of social justice that need our attention (orphan prevention, family re-unification and preservation, kids aging out of foster care, the support of indigenous adoption efforts, etc)? ?Do we really have time to study the theology of adoption when there is so much to be done in the world now? Isn?t it enough that Scripture commands us to care for the poor and marginalized? Shouldn?t we just get to work?

As I have written before, if we think of theology merely as what can be known about God, as the collection of unearthed biblical information about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, then these questions are legitimate. But if by theology we mean a real relational knowing of God, an ongoing and growing experience of our Triune God, then these questions lose their bite. Yes, theology necessarily involves information about God. Scripture is full of it. But information to theology is like H2O to Niagara. Although you can?t have Niagara without H2O, there are water faucets all over the world that drip drops of H2O every few seconds, but those intermittent (and annoying) drops of H2O?do not a Niagara make! What makes Niagara a world renown waterfall is its seemingly ?infinite? supply of H2O to dazzle and amaze us at its power and beauty.

A Mere Collection of Facts?

The theology of Adoption is so much more than a collection of biblically gathered facts about God. Theology is ultimately our real (genuine) participation in the Niagara-like-overflowing mutual knowing and loving of the Father and the Son in the communion of the Spirit. This is why I said that theology is infinitely more than true statements about God. The study of theology and honest-to-goodness communion with the Triune God must go hand in hand.

No one?absolutely no one?was and has a greater theological mind than the Son of God. He has forever known the Father through-and-through. For all of eternity past the Son perfectly knew and communed with his Father. Remarkably, this is the Son who became man, who became incarnate and lived among us! By becoming the incarnate Son, Jesus brought his eternal communion with the Father into the world of men?into the very heart of our broken and sin-devastated world! That?s the good news of the Gospel!

Not a Word Against His People

In his very insightful thoughts on Jesus? High Priestly prayer in John 17 (where we find words like the following coming from Jesus? lips: ?Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world?, v. 24), Marcus Rainsford beautifully writes:

?The whole is a beautiful illustration of our blessed Lord?s intercession at the right hand of God. Not a word against His people; no reference to their failings, or their shortcomings; no allusion to what they had done; none to what they were about to do as a body? No, He speaks of them only as they were in the Father?s purpose, as in association with Himself, and as the recipients of the fullness He came down from heaven to bestow upon them? (Our Lord Prays for His Own, pp. 100-101).

Think about it: there is not a love in the universe and beyond that can fuel social action like the eternal love into which we have been brought to participate ? the eternal love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Of this love, C.S. Lewis? childhood hero, George McDonald wrote:

?The secret of the whole story of humanity is the love between the Father and the Son. That is at the root of it all. Upon the love between the Son and the Father hangs the whole universe . . . The love of God is the creating and redeeming, the forming and satisfying power of the universe . . . It is the safety of the great whole. It is the home-atmosphere of all life . . . The whole of the universe was nothing to Jesus without his Father. The day will come when the whole universe will be nothing to us without the Father, but with the Father an endless glory of delight.?

The Heartbeat of T4A and Its People

If you ever want to know what beats in the heart of T4A conferences and events, it?s the eternal love between the Father and the Son. We always want the main thing in the universe ? the Love Story of God the Father and the Son in the communion of the Spirit ? to be the main thing in our conferences. Nothing fuels social action like participation in the love between the Father and the Son.

So, it is with great pleasure that we invite you to join us this coming October 4-5 in Louisville at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary as we take a ?deep-space exploration into Our Triune God & the Pastor: A Theology of Adoption for the Church (and for everyone who belongs to one!).

Please learn more about this unique conference here: Neither Aslan nor Adoption are Tame.
