Beatles Tribute Band at Dix Hills Performing Arts Center Saturday ...

Mostly Moptop, a Beatles tribute band, will perform at the Dix Hills Performing Arts Center on Saturday.

Here's all the details from bandmember Anthony Pomes:

In shared commemoration of Sir Paul McCartney?s 70th birthday and the annual February anniversary of when The Beatles first came to America in 1964, the Dix Hills Performing Arts Center and The John Lennon Center for Music & Technology will present ?Two of Us: The Ballad of John & Paul,? the ambitious and sensitively-prepared new show from Long Island?s top Beatles tribute band Mostly Moptop.

The concert will explore the legendary songwriting partnership of John Lennon and Paul McCartney?a fascinating interpersonal and creative relationship that began when the two were just boys in Liverpool, England.

?Through the songs in the show, the audience will see and hear how John and Paul thrived and matured as they grew into manhood?only to then maintain separate but equal lives as artists, husbands, and fathers on their own up to the time that Lennon was tragically killed in 1980,? says Anthony Pomes, frontman for Mostly Moptop and Advisory Board member of The John Lennon Center for Music & Technology at Five Towns College. It was Pomes who planned and created the newest of the group?s ?concept concerts? primarily with fellow bandmate John Tabacco.

When asked about how the new show was planned, Pomes recalls that ?John and I spent months this past summer compiling notes and sifting through every song that John and Paul wrote or sang before, during, and after the Beatle years and leading up to Lennon?s death.? The songs were selected, according to Pomes, ?very carefully with an ear aimed towards how the music worked together as a whole?as a result, the show is very much a call-and-response between the words and music of each composer . . . particularly when those words and music signal direct collaboration between the two Beatles.? Examples of this special musical kinship between Lennon and McCartney will be heard throughout the show in songs like ?She Loves You,? ?We Can Work It Out,? ?A Day in the Life,? and ?I?ve Got a Feeling,? among others.

The occasion of Paul McCartney?s 70th birthday this past June 18th held a special poignancy for Tabacco, who traditionally handles most of the McCartney vocals when the band performs. ?I felt the time was right,? Tabacco says, ?to also shine a light more fully on the special contributions that Paul brought to the music and memories of The Beatles.? A good example, according to Tabacco, is the song ?Tomorrow Never Knows? from the 1966 album Revolver: ?While the song isdefinitely a Lennon track,? observes Tabacco, ?the psychedelic tape loops heard throughout were definitely brought to the table by McCartney, who had been experimenting with London?s avant-garde movement for months before Lennon?s track was even recorded.?

Just as Lennon and McCartney could not be the Beatles without George Harrison and Ringo Starr, both Pomes and Tabacco knew that the intricacies of the new show would not be possible to execute until they started to work and rehearse the material with their Mostly Moptop bandmates Edward Franz and Paul Michael Barkan.

?It?s one thing to plan a show in your mind and on paper,? states Pomes, ?but it?s something else completely once you throw that show out into the air and try to make everything flow smoothly.? Pomes and Tabacco both commend the talents of Franz, who they credit with ?keeping us aware of how the material would work?or not?in front of a live audience,? and with Barkan, whose deeply visionary work with his own excellently-reviewed Beatles Magical Orchestra concerts was key to the band?s collective grasp of all song details.

Barkan was also responsible for bringing a new musical guest to the party on this show. In addition to longtime Moptop concert collaborators Don Larsen and Barbara Maurer-Raniere, the group will be joined by brilliant local multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Andrew Lubman, whose own inspired series of YouTube videos (in which Lubman is shown performing classic Beatles tracks note-for-note, and instrument-by-instrument) have achieved their own unique and quickly-growing popularity.

?Andrew is like a long-lost Moptop brother to us,? quips Pomes, who knew Lubman was perfect for the show within 30 seconds of their first spirited rehearsal together. ?He thinks the same way we do about all things Beatle,? Pomes goes on to say, ?and his obsessive attention to detail mirrors that of everyone in our band. People are going to be blown away when they hear what we are doing with Andrew aboard.?

In the end, however, the true center of the concert comes from those two most crucial of emotional states?sadness and joy. ?When John met Paul all those years ago, the mutual loss of their mothers brought deep sadness to them both,? says Pomes.

?Out of that shared inner place of loss, I like to think that John and Paul helped each other to find a special kind of joy through music.? In the months following the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, the joy of Beatlemania helped wipe away much of the nation?s sadness. ?In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which has caused so much damage and heartache recently,? Tabacco says, ?we hope to bring some of the joy that John and Paul found together to our audience.?

MOSTLY MOPTOP is comprised of: Anthony Pomes (rhythm and lead guitar, bass, piano, and vocals); John Tabacco (drums, piano, and vocals); Edward Franz (lead and rhythm guitar, bass, and vocals); and Paul Michael Barkan (bass, keyboards, miscellaneous instruments, vocals).

Tickets for the February 2, 2013, 7:30 p.m., performance range?from $25 to $35. For more information and ticket sales, please contact the Dix Hills Center for the Performing Arts Box Office at (631) 656-2148 or visit online at http://www.dhpac.org/

Are ROMs Really Necessary on a Nexus Phone?

Are ROMs Really Necessary on a Nexus Phone?Dear Lifehacker,
I've rooted my Galaxy Nexus per your guide, but now everyone tells me I should flash a custom ROM. What's the point? Don't people flash custom ROMs to get stock Android, which the Nexus already has?

Sincerely,
Wondering Why

Dear Wondering,
For most users, getting a "stock" ROM is one of the big draws of rooting. However, it's far from the only reasons you'd flash a ROM. Heck, some people flash custom ROMs that keep HTC's Sense interface or Samsung's TouchWiz interface. So why flash? Here are some of the biggest benefits to flashing a ROM, even on a Nexus device.

You Get the Latest Updates

This is a pretty minor point, but it's worth mentioning that not all Nexus devices have the latest version of Android. Ridiculous, right? The Verizon Galaxy Nexus, for example, is still stuck on 4.1?not too bad, but still one version of Jelly Bean behind the others. And, of course, older Nexus devices won't get upgraded forever, so those users will need custom ROMs to bring them up to speed on the latest iterations of Android.

You Get Tons of Extra Features and Tweaks

The big draw of custom ROMs, though, are all the other features they bring. They aren't just stock Android?they're stock Android with lots of other very handy features added by the community. For example, here are some of the features you might find in custom ROMs:

Are ROMs Really Necessary on a Nexus Phone?

  • CyanogenMod (and other ROMs based on it) add the ability to launch up to four other apps from the lock screen slider, adds settings toggles for things like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or Airplane Mode in the notification bar, and options like "Quick Reply" to notifications for SMS messages
  • The AOKP ROM offers lots of customization options, making it easy to theme your ROM, choose different boot animations, change the colors of your widgets and interface elements, and more. Also, unicorns.
  • ParanoidAndroid is a popular ROM based off CyanogenMod with the addition of something called "Hybrid Mode," which lets you run your OS?or just certain apps, if you choose?in their tablet or phablet mode. This can give you a bit of extra screen space on your phone, make certain apps better to navigate, or could just make running apps on a tablet better.

These are just a few small examples, but there are a lot of other features you'll find in any given ROM. Often, you'll even find features from one ROM integrated into another ROM, so you can try out a few and see which one works for you.

The bottom line is that flashing a custom ROM gets you a ton of extra features that you won't find in stock Android. If you haven't tried one out yet, I highly recommend it?if you don't like it, you can go back to stock at any time! But you're bound to find a few features you didn't even know you wanted until you had them.

Sincerely,
Lifehacker

Tapeworm eggs discovered in 270-million-year-old fossil shark feces

Jan. 30, 2013 ? A cluster of tapeworm eggs discovered in 270-million-year-old fossilized shark feces suggests that intestinal parasites in vertebrates are much older than previously known, according to research published Jan. 30 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Paula Dentzien-Dias and colleagues from the Federal University of Rio Grande, Brazil.

Remains of such parasites in vertebrates from this era are rare- of 500 samples examined, only one revealed the tapeworm eggs. This particular discovery helps establish a timeline for the evolution of present-day parasitic tapeworms that occur in foods like pork, fish and beef.

The fossilized eggs were found in a cluster very similar to those laid by modern tapeworms. Some of them are un-hatched and one contains what appears to be a developing larva. According to the study, "This discovery shows that the fossil record of vertebrate intestinal parasites is much older than was previously known and occurred at least 270-300 million years ago."

The fossil described in this study is from Middle-Late Permian times, a period followed by the largest mass extinction known, when nearly 90% of marine species and 70% of terrestrial species died out.

Pemex: 14 dead in blast at Mexico City skyscraper

Rescue workers race to the headquarters of state-owned Mexican oil giant Pemex in Mexico City after a massive explosion Thursday, Jan. 31.

By Kari Huus, Staff Writer, NBC News

A powerful explosion in the Mexico City skyscraper complex housing the headquarters of Pemex, the?state oil monopoly, killed at least 14 people and injured at least 100 others, company and government officials said.

News of the casualties came from Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong, who spoke to Mexican television reporters after rushing to the scene. He said the death toll could rise, and by mid-evening, the newspaper El Universal was citing official sources as saying at least 20 people had been killed. NBC News hasn't confirmed the El Universal report.

Mexican President Enrique Pe?a Nieto arrived at the Pemex administration complex by helicopter Thursday evening to supervise rescue operations, Pemex and the news agency La Prensa reported. Hundreds of Mexican military forces were sent to the complex to "preserve security," officials told El Universal.

Doctors in the emergency room at Central Hospital said they were treating more than 70 people for injuries, most of them broken bones.

Emilio Lozoya Austin, director general of Pemex, which is short for Petr?leos Mexicanos, was flying home from a business trip to Asia. He said he extended his condolences "to all the families of Pemex workers who have lost their loved ones."

The explosion took place in the basement garage of the auxiliary building, next to the company's 52-floor tower in a busy commercial and residential area, said Eduardo S?nchez, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry.

An injured woman is transferred to a stretcher outside the headquarters of state oil giant Pemex in Mexico City on Thursday, Jan. 31.

"Right now, they're conducting a tour of the building and the area adjacent to the blast site to verify if there are any still trapped so they can be rescued immediately," Sanchez said.

The plaster ceiling of the basement collapsed, a spokesman for the local emergency agency said. He described conditions in the tower as "delicate."

S?nchez said as many as 30 people remained trapped in the debris. Search-and-rescue dogs were sent into the skyscraper, parts of which remained on fire at 10 p.m. ET, cloaking the Mexico City skyline in a thick cloud of smoke, Telemundo reported.

The main floor and the mezzanine of the auxiliary building were heavily damaged, along with windows as far as three floors up.?

A man who was on the ground floor when the explosion occurred told Forum TV that the first casualties were taken to a clinic in the adjacent office tower, where several thousand people work.

"It shook the building, and then we were evacuated," he said.

Company touted safety record
News of the blast came toward the end of the business day ? just a few hours after the company had sent two messages on Twitter celebrating how much it had "reduced our accident rate in recent years," announcing that its "safety indicators" exceeded international standards:

"An explosion took place in the B2 building of the administrative center," Pemex tweeted just after 4 p.m. local time (5 p.m. ET). "There are injuries and damage on the ground floor and mezzanine," it said, promising further information as it became available.

Later, the company tweeted: "Regrettably, they have confirmed 14 people dead and 80 injured."

The number of injured later rose to at least 100.

Pemex initially said the building had been evacuated because of a problem with its electricity supply. It then said there had been an explosion, but it didn't give the cause.

The scene at Pemex headquarters in Mexico City on Thursday, Jan. 31, after an explosion. There was no official explanation for the blast.

Television images showed people being evacuated ? some on office chairs and gurneys. Emergency crews loaded people on stretchers into helicopters and airlifted them out of the area.

"The place shook, we lost power and suddenly there was debris everywhere," Cristian Obele told Milenio news network. "Colleagues were helping us out of the building."

Jose Cuellar, a mechanic who works near the cimplex, said he was repairing a car when an explosion rocked his entire workshop.

"We went to see and saw people coming out injured," Cuella, 45, told El Universal. "Other people were carrying them."
